NJ Advance Media seeks a data-focused Reporter who turns public records, live data, and smart analysis into actionable journalism for New Jersey readers. Qualifications

• A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related field (or equivalent education/work experience).
• Minimum of 2 years of professional journalism experience with data reporting.
• Clear, engaging writing style; translate numbers into human stories.
• Experience using AI tools in professional workflows and understanding their limits.
• Familiarity with public data sources (e.g., Census data, agency portals, public records).
• Ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize.
• Solid understanding of news writing ethics and disclosure, including AI use.
• Experience using social media to find stories and promote content.
• Ability to work collaboratively with editors, reporters, designers and audience specialists.

Responsibilities

• Produce multiple data stories weekly, including quick-turn pieces tied to breaking news.
• Scrape, clean, join, and structure public records and data sets with AI-assisted workflows.
• Create visualizations and interactive pages—tables, maps, trackers—mobile-first and article-embedded.
• Move from idea to prototype quickly using AI coding tools and iterate based on reader use.
• Extend work beyond the article to newsletters, alerts, social video, and subscriber tools.
• Interview experts and community members to add depth and context to data.
• Ensure accuracy with human review and standard disclosure for AI-assisted stories.
• Collaborate with reporters, multimedia, social specialists and editors on enterprise coverage.
