Job summary

Overture Partners is seeking a Data Governance & SQL Specialist to strengthen enterprise data governance, improve metadata visibility, and modernize data platforms. The role combines hands-on SQL work with governance practices across technical and business teams.

The ideal candidate will assess metadata, define data ownership, support governance models, and evaluate data governance tech for measurable value, while facilitating collaborations between data owners and stewards.

Qualifications

  • Strong hands-on SQL programming skills with the ability to independently write, troubleshoot, and optimize queries.
  • Practical experience with data governance, including metadata management, data catalogs, lineage, business terminology, data quality, and sensitive-data controls.
  • Experience assessing existing data environments to determine what information is captured, how it is defined, and where governance or quality gaps exist.
  • Understanding of data stewardship and ownership models, including how business teams and centralized data functions divide accountability.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into practical data governance policies, standards, definitions, and operating procedures.
  • Working knowledge of modern data architecture, including cloud data platforms, enterprise data warehouses, and legacy-to-cloud migration concepts.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work across technical teams, business stakeholders, data owners, and data stewards.
  • Demonstrated intellectual curiosity and coachability, with a genuine desire to learn new technologies, understand business processes, ask thoughtful questions, and continuously expand technical knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the existing data platform to identify what metadata is currently collected, documented, maintained, and available to users.
  • Document data definitions, business terminology, lineage, ownership, quality requirements, and other governance-related information across relevant datasets.
  • Establish effective working relationships with data stewards and data owners while helping clarify responsibilities for ongoing data management.
  • Support a governance council and operating model in which centralized data leadership defines policies and standards while business teams manage routine data-quality issues.
  • Evaluate a prospective data governance platform by testing capabilities against representative enterprise data and documenting its practical strengths, limitations, and potential business value.
  • Perform hands-on SQL analysis to investigate data structures, validate information, identify quality concerns, and support governance and migration decisions.
  • Contribute to data migration activities, including the movement and validation of information required to support retirement of legacy database infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with business and technical stakeholders to convert operational needs into actionable governance standards, policies, definitions, and controls.
  • Support appropriate management of sensitive information by applying knowledge of personally identifiable information, masking, classification, access, and data-quality practices.
  • Build familiarity with emerging analytics and AI use cases, including how source data enters a platform, supports predictive models, and ultimately enables automated or agent-driven business actions.
