Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in information systems, Computer Science, or a quantitative discipline or equivalent.
• Directly related PhD preferred.
• Seven+ years of work experience in measurement/analysis, predictive analytics, or related fields.
• Extensive knowledge in data engineering and ML frameworks; experience with large-scale batch or online systems.

Job description

FedEx is hiring a Data Engineer Principal for a hybrid role based in Plano, TX. In this position, you will help drive enterprise data engineering innovation by setting technical standards and leading end-to-end delivery for critical data initiatives, from ingestion and transformation to robust pipelines at scale.

Role overview

This role includes ownership of key engineering efforts and oversight of code review and deployment. You will also advance FEC capabilities by introducing modern data engineering tools and methods across FedEx projects, platforms, and products, while championing reusable assets and current best practices.

Responsibilities

• Take end-to-end ownership and responsibility for critical data engineering initiatives.
• Advance FEC capabilities to use and deploy cutting-edge data engineering tools and methods across FEC projects, platforms, and products.
• Champion the design and building of reusable data engineering assets to anchor current best practices.
• Stay on the leading edge by disseminating the latest methods and tools for extremely large-scale and complex data engineering problems.
• Oversee the design, build, test, and maintenance of data pipelines at big data scale.
• Lead batch processing of collected data to ensure readiness for analysis.
• Instantiate processes to keep the ecosystem and pipeline optimized and efficient, including troubleshooting performance and data-related problems and providing expert guidance.
• Independently implement parsers, validators, transformers, and correlators to reformat, update, and enhance data.
• Use knowledge spanning data engineering, CI/CD, statistics, and machine learning practices to recommend approaches to the most organizationally critical and complex data-related problems.
• Advise junior data engineers, managers, and less senior professionals.

Required qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in information systems, Computer Science, or a quantitative discipline such as Mathematics or Engineering, or equivalent formal training or work experience.
• Directly related PhD preferred.
• Seven (7) years (or equivalent) of work experience in measurement and analysis, quantitative business problem solving, simulation development, and/or predictive analytics.
• Extensive knowledge in data engineering and machine learning frameworks, including designing, developing, and implementing highly complex systems and data pipelines.
• Extensive knowledge in Information Systems, including designing, developing, and implementing large batch or online transaction-based systems.
• Strong understanding of the transportation industry, competitors, and evolving technologies.
• Experience providing expert leadership in a general planning or consulting setting.
• Experience as a leader or a senior member of multi-functional project teams.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively to senior audiences.
• A related advanced degree may offset related experience requirements.

Compensation and location

Location: Plano, TX (hybrid). Candidates residing within 50 miles of a FedEx campus will be required to work on-site at a FedEx location several times per week.

Salary range (Plano): $11,766.26/monthly to $15,884.45/monthly. The compensation range is provided as a reasonable estimate of the current starting salary range across all potential locations. Actual starting pay will depend on experience relative to the job, market level, pay at the location for this job, and other job-related factors per permitted law.
