Job summary

Crane is seeking a Data Platform Engineer in Houston to design and operate streaming data pipelines and governance across source systems into the platform. You will manage schemas and data contracts, infrastructure as code, and secure access across teams.

The role emphasizes reliability, monitoring, and scalable platform features. Ideal candidates have 5+ years in data engineering, strong Python/SQL skills, and experience with Kafka and cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer/ software engineering, computer science, Maths or Physics is required.
  • 5+ years in a data engineering or data-heavy backend software engineering role.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time, ongoing basis without sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain streaming and replication pipelines (CDC, Kafka, Materialize).
  • Manage schemas, topics, and data contracts (Schema Registry, Protobuf/Avro).
  • Provision and manage infrastructure as code (Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker).
  • Configure clusters, access controls, and role-based permissions for shared platform resources.
  • Own CI/CD pipelines and deployment tooling (GitHub Actions).
  • Build monitoring, alerting, and observability (Prometheus, Grafana, PagerDuty).
  • Participate in on-call rotations, investigate incidents, and drive durable fixes.
  • Write and maintain runbooks, architecture docs, and platform guides.

Job description

  • Build and maintain streaming and replication pipelines (CDC, Kafka, Materialize) that move data reliably from source systems into the platform.
  • Manage schemas, topics, and data contracts (Schema Registry, Protobuf/Avro) to keep producers and consumers consistent and governed.
  • Provision and manage infrastructure as code (Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker) across shared environments.
  • Configure clusters, access controls, and role-based permissions for shared platform resources.
  • Own CI/CD pipelines and deployment tooling (GitHub Actions) so teams can ship safely and quickly.
  • Build monitoring, alerting, and observability (Prometheus, Grafana, PagerDuty) to catch problems before users do.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, investigate incidents, and drive durable (not band-aid) fixes with clear post-incident follow-through.
  • Write and maintain runbooks, architecture docs, and platform guides so teams can self-serve.
  • Participate in design reviews and RFCs to align platform solutions with business and engineering requirements.
  • Expertise in Kafka, streaming systems, Python (or similar), SQL, and cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer/software engineering, computer science,Mathsor Physics isrequired
  • 5+yearsprior experience in a data engineering or data-heavy backend software engineering role
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time, ongoing basis without the need for current or future employer sponsorship

  • Job requires the ability to use vision, adjust focus and work on a standard computer screen
