Job summary

California Franchise Tax Board seeks a Data Engineer (Information Technology Associate) to help build, maintain, and troubleshoot data parsing and transformation processes that load and structure data into the Enterprise Data Lake. Qualifications

• Experience writing SQL queries and working with databases such as DB2, SQL Server, or similar platforms.
• Ability to interpret relational database structures, including physical data models and table relationships
• Knowledge of distributed data environments such as Hive, HDFS, or comparable big‑data systems; experience with relational, warehouse, and Hive data architectures; and familiarity with Apache Hive/HiveQL in Hadoop environments for querying and processing large‑scale datasets
• Familiarity with structured project methodologies or experience participating in the SDLC lifecycle of system or data‑related projects
• Experience with data processing tools or ETL/ELT technologies such as DataStage
• Comfortable working with structured data formats (XML, JSON) and scripting languages such as Unix, Python etc
• Experience working with data processing frameworks such as PySpark
• Ability to support and troubleshoot data workflows, identify data anomalies, and help ensure high‑quality data outputs
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a ttention to detail, accuracy, and logical thinking
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across technical and non‑technical teams
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, demonstrating initiative, reliability, ownership of tasks, accountability, and a proactive approach to learning
• Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
• Proficiency with common productivity tools such as Outlook, Teams, Excel, Word, and SharePoint
