Ontrac Solutions is seeking a seasoned Data Engineer to lead a high-priority project pivotal for financial decisions and business transformation in a PE-backed manufacturing initiative. The role offers an opportunity to impact directly by establishing critical data processes, ensuring consistency, and collaborating effectively with key stakeholders while working remotely.
Industry: Private Equity–Backed Manufacturing
Location: Remote (US-Based Preferred)
Start Date: ASAP
Duration: 3–6 months with high potential for extension (Phase 2)
Are you a seasoned Data Engineer looking for a project where your work directly drives financial decisions and business transformation? Join us on a high-priority initiative for a PE-backed manufacturer undergoing a major ERP shift. Your mission: help establish a critical monthly inventory valuation process by unlocking data from a legacy AS400 system.
This is a unique opportunity to lead a highly visible, hands-on project from the ground up—solving real business problems, working with engaged stakeholders, and setting the stage for long-term modernization.
Design & build an interim data extraction pipeline from a legacy AS400 (IBM iSeries) system.
Create a monthly “book of record” for inventory valuation, enabling financial close and business reporting.
Engineer a method to lock monthly labor and material inputs for data consistency and audit-readiness.
Collaborate directly with finance, ops, and executive stakeholders—no red tape.
Set the foundation for Phase 2: advanced visualization and ongoing maintenance.
8+ years of experience as a data engineer or technical data consultant.
Solid track record of working with legacy systems, especially AS400/DB2 (strongly preferred).
Strong skills in ETL pipeline development, SQL, and handling structured enterprise data.
Comfortable working in fast-paced, private equity-backed or high-growth environments.
Deep understanding of inventory valuation, cost inputs, or financial close processes.
You’re a self-starter, comfortable owning deliverables and working independently.
AS400 / DB2 (preferred), legacy ERPs
Python, SQL, Bash/Shell scripting
SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake
Git or version control workflows
Power BI, Tableau (for future phases)
Immediate impact on a business-critical initiative
Flexible, remote work setup with autonomy
Work with a highly collaborative client team who values technical leadership
Opportunity to own a project end-to-end, not just maintain someone else's code
Visibility and influence with executive stakeholders
Possibility for follow-on work in analytics, visualization, and ERP transformation
