Job description

Data Engineer, DC Engineering, Data Center Engineering Security Solutions

AWS Data Center Engineering is responsible for the design and planning of AWS's global data center infrastructure. In this role, you will be a key part of the team that designs and delivers the physical security environment that hosts AWS's industry-leading cloud services for our customers. This includes designing comprehensive data center security solutions that give our customers confidence their infrastructure is well-protected. You will work on complex, multifaceted challenges, balancing a myriad of data points to raise the bar on physical security and reliability. If you thrive on tackling ambitious projects at scale, this is an exceptional opportunity to make a significant impact.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.

You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

The AWS Facility Operations Center (FOC) team is seeking a Data Engineer (DE) to serve as a technical resource and leader to drive the team’s long-term vision within the Data Center Community (DCC).

Key job responsibilities
  1. Designing, developing, deploying, and documenting data management and business intelligence systems, enabling our internal customers to manage the business and make effective decisions.
  2. Building secure, available, scalable, and cost-effective data solutions using data storage technologies, distributed file system, data processing, and business intelligence best practices.
  3. Working with business customers in understanding the business requirements and implementing solutions to support analytical and reporting needs.
  4. Designing and planning for solutions in the various engineering subject areas as it relates to data storage and movement solutions: data warehousing, enterprise system data architecture, data design (e.g., Logical and Physical Modeling), data persistence technologies, data processing, data management, and data analysis.
  5. Ensuring completeness and compatibility of the technical infrastructure to support system performance, availability and architecture requirements.
  6. Reviewing and participating in testing of the data design, tool design, data extracts/transforms, networks and hardware selections.

About the team
The AWS Data Center Engineering team is looking for the ideal candidate who will draw upon exemplary analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, and a passion for maintaining highly reliable, distributed systems that operate 24/7/365.

As part of this team, you will collaborate effectively with internal end-users, cross-functional software development teams, and technical support/sustaining engineering teams to solve complex challenges and deliver against high operational standards of system availability and reliability. We seek engineers who are excellent communicators, self-motivated, flexible, hardworking, and who like to have fun!

Minimum Qualifications
  1. 5+ years of data engineering experience
  2. 2+ years of preparation of data for direct use in visualization tools like Tableau experience
  3. 2+ years experience with data modeling, warehousing and building ETL pipelines
  4. 2+ years experience with CI/CD infrastructure CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform, and at least one modern scripting or programming language, such as Python
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience with AWS technologies like Redshift, S3, AWS Glue, EMR, Kinesis, FireHose, Lambda, and IAM roles and permissions
  2. Experience with non-relational databases / data stores (object storage, document or key-value stores, graph databases, column-family databases)
  3. Experience building end-user facing tools using data visualization such as Quicksight, Tableau, or similar tools
