Job summary

Garmin seeks a Data Engineer 2 for its U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. The role focuses on data development and ensuring operational stability of Big Data ecosystems.

Qualifications

  • Experience with Star Schema Modeling, Spark, or Hadoop.
  • Experience developing SSIS packages or similar ETL for data integration.
  • Experience tuning ETL jobs to run at scale.
  • Experience writing complex queries across disparate systems.
  • Experience with Java, Hadoop components, and data visualization.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical input to feature development plans and concept documents.
  • Configures and administers data servers and Hadoop components.
  • Develops scalable data architectures using big-data technologies.
  • Analyzes data structures and recommends improvements.
  • Leads incident troubleshooting and develops reliable solutions.
  • Participates in design, code, test, and maintenance phases of software life cycle.
  • Guides POCs with design, coding, and performance measurement.
  • Contributes to team roadmap and priorities and discusses innovations.

We are seeking a full-time

Overview

We are seeking a full-time Data Engineer 2 at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for contributing to data development and operational stability of the Big Data ecosystems.

Essential Functions
  • Provides technical input to feature development plans and concept documents
  • Understands production and operations issues as they relate to engineering
  • Configures and administers data servers and Hadoop components
  • Develops scalable, extensible solution architectures leveraging contemporary big-data technologies in an evolving operational framework
  • Analyzes existing data structures and recommends improvements
  • Partners with team lead to identify technical requirements and alternatives to accomplish projects, leads major incident troubleshooting involving multiple disciplines and develops reliable solutions to complex problems which require ingenuity and creativity
  • Participates in design, code, test, maintenance, enhance and decommission phases throughout software life cycle to contribute technical expertise and to identify issues
  • Participates in and helps guide research POCs, including design, coding, and performance and efficacy measurement
  • Provides significant contributions to defining team roadmap and priorities, facilitates team discussions and plans, and offers innovative suggestions within area of discipline
  • Demonstrates broad understanding of Garmin's business model, including various departments and is recognized as an expert in assigned discipline and applies extensive technical expertise and analysis to initiatives
  • Researches new technologies and proposes cost effective solutions and contributes input to broader technology solutions outside of discipline
  • Provides 24x7 on call support
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Business or related field AND a minimum of 2 years relevant experience
  • Experience with one or more of the following: Star Schema Modeling, Spark, or Hadoop
  • Experience developing SSIS packages or similar technologies to support data integration processes
  • Experience tuning and optimizing ETL jobs to perform at scale
  • Experience writing complex queries combining data from disparate systems
  • Experience with Java, Hadoop and various components
  • Experience developing data visualizations
  • Demonstrated ability to implement new technologies effectively
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Consistently demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work documentation/organization
Desired Qualifications
  • Building data models and transformations inside PowerBI
  • Experience with real-time streaming technologies such as Kafka
  • Experience developing data visualizations using PowerBI
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining star schema models
