Job summary

Version 1 is seeking a highly skilled Data Engineer to lead the migration of analytics workloads from on-premises systems to the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) BigQuery environment. You will mentor junior team members and coordinate with business teams to translate requirements into scalable technical solutions.

You will drive testing, design specifications, and code reviews while ensuring compliance with standards.

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in data engineering, with a proven track record of managing large-scale data migration projects.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud-based data technologies, particularly experience with migrating data and systems to cloud platforms such as GCP.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools and methodologies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, capable of translating complex technical concepts for diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to manage large teams and collaborate effectively in a hybrid working environment.
  • Deep understanding of systems architecture, databases, and data management principles.
  • Strong requirements gathering and business analysis skills to facilitate effective communication between technical teams and business stakeholders.
  • Technical solution design expertise, with the ability to determine optimal technology blends to meet project requirements.
  • Ability to perform complex data analysis, facilitate decision-making, and synthesize technical information for varied audiences.
  • Knowledge of taxation, customs, or related regulatory environments is desirable.
  • Experience with project delivery methodologies, including waterfall, agile, and hybrid models.
  • Proficiency in programming languages outlined in Appendix 9 of RFT2024, with hands‑on experience working with relational and NoSQL databases such as SQL, Ingres, Hadoop, XML, JSON, and text files.
  • Ability to review project deliverables for quality, completeness, and compliance with standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for the migration of analytics workloads from on-premises systems to GCP BigQuery.
  • Collaborate with business teams to understand their data requirements and support them throughout the migration process.
  • Assign migration tasks to junior team members and monitor their progress to ensure adherence to project timelines and quality standards.
  • Design and implement testing and validation programs to ensure the integrity and performance of migrated workloads.
  • Create detailed functional design specifications and user stories to guide development efforts.
  • Ensure all development activities comply with Revenue standards and best practices.
  • Conduct code reviews and quality assurance to maintain high standards of output.
  • Mentor and coach junior team members, supporting their technical growth and professional development.
  • Guide intermediate-level team members, providing technical support and knowledge sharing.
  • Assist project managers by providing accurate resource estimates, tracking project progress, and reporting variances.
  • Identify potential technical risks and issues, proactively managing them to minimize impact on project delivery.
  • Investigate and resolve live incidents, performing root cause analysis and implementing permanent solutions or workarounds as necessary.
  • Coordinate live issue management across various Revenue Systems, liaising with development and service improvement teams to implement fixes.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous service improvements and lead initiatives to enhance system performance and reliability.

About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Data Engineer to join our dynamic team at Version 1. Reporting directly to the Data Engineering Manager, this role involves leading the migration of analytics workloads from on-premises systems to the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) BigQuery environment. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in data engineering, cloud technologies, and migration projects. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless transition of data systems, working closely with business teams to understand their requirements and translating them into effective technical solutions.
