Job summary

NextGen seeks a Senior Commissioning Engineer with 7+ years in field construction and QA/QC to lead commissioning activities for critical facilities in the U.S. You will oversee installation, testing, and startup of mechanical and electrical systems, ensuring compliance with codes and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all electrical and mechanical systems are installed, tested, and performing per specs and codes.
  • Review FAT results and close open items with vendors before functional testing.
  • Audit inspection checklists and document QA/QC findings.
  • Develop and maintain commissioning plans, schedules, and test procedures.
  • Conduct L1–L3 inspections to confirm readiness of equipment (switchgear, PDUs, UPS, transformers, etc.).
  • Verify pre-functional/startup testing and coordinate LOTO with Energy Marshall.
  • Validate system integration across mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
  • Identify deficiencies and drive corrective actions through retesting and turnover readiness.

Job description

Key Responsibilities: Commissioning Activities
  • Ensure all electrical and mechanical systems are installed, tested, and performing in accordance with project specifications, design intent, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Review Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) results for major equipment and track closure of open or deferred items with vendors and site teams prior to functional testing.
  • Audit GC and trade inspection checklists for accuracy and completeness, and perform independent QA/QC inspections with full documentation of findings.
  • Develop and maintain commissioning plans, schedules, and test procedures for mechanical systems.
  • Conduct proactive inspections through L1–L3 phases to confirm proper handling, installation, and readiness of equipment such as switchgear, PDUs, UPS systems, transformers, CRAC, VFD’s, pumps, and generators.
  • Verify that pre-functional and startup testing (L3) are properly executed and documented by trade contractors, ensuring all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and energization activities are coordinated with the site Energy Marshall.
  • Validate system integration and interoperability between mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
  • Identify deficiencies and manage corrective actions through retesting and verification prior to turnover to the commissioning team.
Qualifications: Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Relevant certifications, such as Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP), Professional Engineer (PE), or LEED Accredited Professional, are a plus.
Experience
  • 7+ years of field construction experience with a strong QA/QC background
  • Data center, mission-critical, or large-scale industrial construction experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience in an owner's representative or third-party QA/QC inspector capacity preferred.
  • Solid understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Expertise in electrical distribution systems, including low, medium, and high-voltage equipment as well as Mechanical experience to include TAB.
  • Familiar with NCR processes, inspection test plans (ITPs), and quality documentation requirements.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and codes, such as IEEE, NEC, NFPA, and NETA.
