Job summary

UT-Battelle seeks a Mechanical Engineer to design, construct, and operate mechanical systems for ORNL data centers. You will provide engineering oversight for facility-level cooling and piping, and interface with HPC platforms, while coordinating with teams and vendors on a new data center project.

The role requires 5+ years of design experience, strong collaboration with operations, construction, and maintenance, and the ability to obtain SCI clearance.

Qualifications

• BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from an ABET-accredited program.
• Minimum of five years of design experience with cooling and piping system design, including component sizing and controls.
• Experience supporting design reviews, construction oversight, field inspections, commissioning, testing, and technical issue resolution for facility electrical systems.
• Ability to coordinate with operations, construction, facilities, vendors, and other stakeholders in a co-occupancy environment.
• Experience creating, organizing, and managing project documents from conception to closeout.

Responsibilities

• Oversee mechanical engineering and design oversight for data center projects, reviewing documents, change orders, requirements, and specifications.
• Support planning, design, construction, commissioning, and turnover of mechanical systems for mission-critical data center facilities within scope, schedule, and budget.
• Develop and review project definitions, conceptual designs, scopes, cost estimates, schedules, and construction packages.
• Review contractor proposals to ensure alignment with scope and objectives.
• Coordinate technical issue resolution with design teams, construction representatives, operations staff, and vendors.
• Conduct design reviews to ensure drawings, data sheets, and cost estimates meet scope requirements.
• Collaborate with ORNL utilities, facility automation, operations, maintenance, and safety to ensure complete installations.
• Identify and resolve safety, cost, schedule, quality, and constructability concerns.
