Job summary

Google is seeking a Data Center Mechanical Engineer to manage large-scale thermal systems on-site, bridging high-level designs with field execution to ensure reliability and efficiency. You will serve as the primary technical contact for mechanical and HVAC questions during construction, guiding contractors and ensuring compliance with codes, standards, and project goals.

Expect significant on-site presence in a fast-paced, high-availability environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of mechanical engineering experience supporting construction for industrial or mission-critical facilities.
  • Experience with chilled water plants, hydronic balancing, and evaporative/non-evaporative cooling topologies (e.g., cooling towers, chillers, CRAHs).
  • Ability to travel upto 50% of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the definitive technical resource for mechanical contractors and Engineer-on-Record (EORs), supporting mechanical system design and assisting to resolve ambiguities in mechanical systems to maintain construction momentum.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams for the resolution of complex issues, design intent, and changes to the design during the construction process.
  • Lead the field-side Request for Information (RFI) process, identifying potential spatial or mechanical conflicts and providing immediate engineering solutions to avoid rework.
  • Perform periodic, site walk-throughs to verify that mechanical installations align with engineered specifications, focusing on pressure testing, weld inspection requirements, insulation integrity, and equipment placement.
  • Ensure that evaporative and non-evaporative thermal systems are installed to meet project-specific standards, local building codes, ASME standards, and environmental regulations.

About the job:

Our thirst for technology is a part of everything we do. The Data Center Engineering team takes the physical design of our data centers into the future. Our lab mirrors a research and development department -- cutting-edge strategies are born, tested and tested again. Along with a team of great minds, you take on complex topics like how we use power or how to run state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly facilities. You're a visionary who optimizes for efficiencies and never stops seeking improvements -- even small changes that can make a huge impact. You generate ideas, communicate recommendations to senior-level executives and drive implementation alongside facilities technicians.

With your technical expertise, you ensure compliance with codes and standards, develop infrastructure improvements and serve as an expert in your specialty (e.g., cooling, electrical).

As a Data Center Mechanical Engineer, you will serve as the primary on-site authority for large-scale thermal management, ensuring that complex cooling infrastructures essential for high-availability environments are installed, integrated, and optimized according to design intent. Acting as the lead technical point of contact for mechanical and HVAC-related engineering questions during construction, you will bridge the gap between high-level thermal designs and physical site execution to ensure maximum system reliability and efficiency.

Behind everything our users see online is the architecture built by the Technical Infrastructure team to keep it running. From developing and maintaining our data centers to building the next generation of Google platforms, we make Google's product portfolio possible. We're proud to be our engineers' engineers and love voiding warranties by taking things apart so we can rebuild them. We keep our networks up and running, ensuring our users have the best and fastest experience possible. Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
