Data Center Engineering Design Manager - Kansas City, MO

This opportunity is with a leading provider of mission‑critical data center solutions as a Managed Services Provider as an Owner's Rep for Construction Services. This firm provides a complete life cycle of solutions that are custom‑fit to the requirements of their client's mission‑critical facilities.

This challenging and unique role will involve directing the design of Critical Power Systems and HVAC / Cooling / Mechanical Equipment for new data centers and expansions to existing data centers. The ideal candidate will have past experience designing electrical systems specifically for large data centers, in‑depth knowledge of heating and cooling load calculations, ductwork and piping sizing, selecting HVAC equipment, energy modeling, and Electrical Power Distribution System design and installation. Previous experience with electrical equipment design to include Generators, UPS systems and electrical switchgear is a must. Our ideal candidate will lead and manage the design of critical and high‑impact components of systems, collaborate cross‑functionally with multiple teams, ensure consistency in architectural principles and promote best practices, identify and evaluate emerging technologies and trends, and drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance engineering efficiency.

Responsibilities
  • Manage projects, create designs and plans, gather specifications, and execute assignments in a multidisciplinary electrical and mechanical engineering design role for small to medium sized data center facility design projects.
  • Create conceptual designs based on meetings.
  • Champion design reports; produce engineering proposals (RFPs); facilitate client meetings and presentations that meet the company's objectives.
  • Establish project objectives, policies, procedures, and performance standards within company policies; document these in concise work statements for the field.
  • Review drawings and specifications, participate in equipment selection, and provide input to the design team.
  • Represent the Operations team in startup, testing, factory witness testing, commissioning, and turnover; support the commissioning manager as needed.
  • Ensure that the design and construction are operable and maintainable.
  • Develop guidelines and standards for operational processes; contribute to the development of design standards.
  • Track progress of projects against goals, objectives, timelines, and budgets.
  • Develop and administer an Operations and Maintenance audit program.
  • Lead After‑Action Reviews and incorporate lessons learned into policies.
  • Provide subject‑matter expertise on critical systems maintenance and operations; assist with troubleshooting issues.
  • Provide onsite support during major maintenance activities when needed.
  • Ensure proper procedures are written and reviewed before activities.
  • Manage a team of engineers and technical staff.
Qualifications
  • 5‑10 years of experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or similar.
  • Licensed PE/EIT a plus.
  • Prior experience at an engineering consulting firm.
  • Experience with hyperscale or colo data center design.
  • Experience managing an engineering design team.
  • Experience with Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, BIM a plus.
  • Experience with UPS, Generators, Switchgear, and Batteries.
  • Experience on complex data center/mission critical design projects.
  • Experience with Mechanical systems (HVAC, CFD, Boilers, Chillers, Pumps, CRAC/CRAH units, Air Handling Units).
  • Experience in operational handover of mission‑critical facilities.
  • Experience developing design, commissioning, operational standards and guidelines.
  • Experience performing root‑cause analysis on complex failures.
  • Experience developing operating and emergency procedures.
  • Experience performing field observations during construction.
  • Self‑starter, self‑motivated, able to work independently.
  • Previous military experience a plus.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Project, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint.
