Job summary

DataFlex Recruitment is conducting a confidential search for a Data Center Electrical Technician in Austin, TX. This role maintains mission-critical electrical infrastructure including UPS, PDUs, generators, and switchgear to ensure 100% facility availability.

The ideal candidate has at least three years of data center electrical experience, strong troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to safety and reliability in a 24/7 on-call environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of three years of electrical experience within a data center, industrial facility, critical infrastructure site, manufacturing environment, or similarly complex operation.
  • Valid journeyman electrician license.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, one-line diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to participate in a rotating after-hours on-call schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repairs on critical electrical equipment.
  • Maintain UPS systems, PDUs, generators, switchgear, transformers, power panels, and related electrical infrastructure.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical issues quickly to minimize downtime and maintain continuous facility operations.
  • Support the maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to help ensure 100% facility availability.
  • Assist with the installation and commissioning of power panels, PDUs, transformers, switchgear, and related equipment.
  • Review electrical drawings, specifications, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Confirm that new installations meet operational, safety, and load requirements.
  • Monitor power usage and respond to alarms using BMS/EPMS where applicable.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, testing, preventive maintenance, and other electrical work.

Schedule: 24/7 operational environment with rotating on-call responsibilities

Position Overview

DataFlex Recruitment is conducting a confidential search for an experienced Data Center Electrical Technician on behalf of a growing national data center owner and operator.

This position is responsible for maintaining the mission-critical electrical infrastructure supporting a highly available data center environment. The Electrical Technician will inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and assist with the installation of electrical systems, including UPS systems, power distribution units, generators, switchgear, transformers, breakers, and associated controls.

The successful candidate will have strong industrial or data center electrical experience, excellent troubleshooting abilities, and a commitment to safety, accountability, integrity, and responsive customer service.

This position participates in a 24/7 operational support model and shares responsibility for after-hours support through a rotating weekly on-call schedule.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Maintenance and Repair

  • Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repairs on critical electrical equipment.
  • Maintain UPS systems, PDUs, generators, switchgear, breakers, transformers, power panels, and related electrical infrastructure.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical issues quickly to minimize downtime and maintain continuous facility operations.
  • Support the maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to help ensure 100% facility availability.

Power Distribution

  • Install, maintain, and monitor electrical distribution systems throughout the data center.
  • Perform circuit load balancing and verify that electrical capacity supports current and anticipated requirements.
  • Assist with power-capacity planning and efforts related to Power Usage Effectiveness.
  • Support rack installations and reconfigurations by confirming proper power connectivity and load requirements.

Emergency Power Systems

  • Test and monitor UPS systems, backup generators, and other emergency power infrastructure.
  • Coordinate scheduled load-bank testing and preventive maintenance activities with internal facility teams and outside vendors.
  • Respond promptly to electrical alarms, abnormal operating conditions, and power-related incidents.

Equipment Installation and Commissioning

  • Assist with the installation and commissioning of power panels, PDUs, transformers, switchgear, and related equipment.
  • Review electrical drawings, specifications, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Confirm that new installations meet operational, safety, and load requirements.

Safety and Compliance

  • Perform all work in accordance with OSHA requirements, NFPA 70E, applicable electrical codes, and established data center safety procedures.
  • Follow proper lockout/tagout and electrical safety protocols.
  • Maintain compliance when working around high-voltage equipment and mission-critical infrastructure.
  • Identify and report potential safety, reliability, or compliance concerns.

Monitoring and Documentation

  • Use Building Management Systems and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems to monitor power usage, identify anomalies, and support troubleshooting.
  • Respond promptly to alarms and alerts to prevent or minimize service interruptions.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, testing, preventive maintenance, and other electrical work.
  • Prepare incident reports and communicate equipment status, electrical capacity, and operational concerns to management.

Team Support

  • Support daily facility operations and collaborate with operations, engineering, vendors, contractors, and customer-facing teams.
  • Guide and mentor less-experienced team members when needed.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, safety, and technical excellence.
  • Perform additional facility-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of three years of electrical experience within a data center, industrial facility, critical infrastructure site, manufacturing environment, or similarly complex operation.
  • Valid journeyman electrician license.
  • Strong working knowledge of critical electrical infrastructure, including UPS systems, PDUs, generators, switchgear, breakers, transformers, and power-distribution systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, one-line diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively during emergencies and service-impacting events.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to participate in a rotating after-hours on-call schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification or associate degree in electrical engineering, electronics, electrical technology, or a related discipline.
  • OSHA or NFPA 70E safety training.
  • Previous experience working in a mission-critical data center.
  • Experience using BMS, EPMS, or related power-monitoring platforms.
  • Experience supporting equipment commissioning, generator testing, and preventive maintenance programs.

Working Conditions

  • Work is primarily performed inside an operating data center with exposure to energized and high-voltage equipment.
  • Must be comfortable working in a 24/7 mission-critical environment.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, climb, and lift throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces when required.
  • Occasional after-hours, emergency, weekend, or holiday support may be necessary.
  • Participation in the site’s rotating on-call schedule is required.
