Job summary

athenahealth, Inc. is seeking a Data Center Engineer to share 24x7 DC support responsibilities and manage lifecycle of servers, storage and networking within our Ashburn data center. You will work closely with operations teams and vendors to keep equipment running optimally and coordinate replacements.

The role emphasizes problem solving, documentation, and collaboration on power, cooling, and network planning, with remote hands support across multiple groups.

Qualifications

  • Ability to lift equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Experience in a production data center environment is highly preferred.
  • Understanding of data center power and cooling infrastructure components is preferred.
  • Deep understanding of server components and repair is preferred.
  • Ability to troubleshoot Dell and HP server hardware, opening support cases with vendors as needed.
  • Basic understanding of power and cooling systems in data environments is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of the Linux command line interface is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Share responsibility of 24x7 support of data center issues with other local team members.
  • Manage lifecycle of servers, storage and network equipment within the facility, including receiving, racking, maintenance, and recycling.
  • Work with operations teams and vendors to ensure all equipment is operating optimally.
  • Coordinate and execute replacement of failed components.
  • Coordinate, communicate and supervise facility maintenance.
  • Perform daily facility walkthroughs to prevent inventory discrepancies and ensure cleanliness.
  • Ensure data center, office and storage spaces are tidy and compliant with policies.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware or connectivity problems.
  • Act as first responder for data center issues and participate in problem solving and process improvements.
  • Collaborate on high-level planning, design and documentation for power, cooling, and Layer 1 networking.
  • Provide remote hands support on physical server, network and telecom equipment for multiple groups.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with data center facility manager/team.
  • Contribute to the DCEng knowledge base, documentation and culture.

We maintain thousands of servers, petabytes of storage and the entire infrastructure that supports them. The Data Center Engineering Team (DCEng), is responsible for the entire lifecycle of the physical devices and environmental conditions in our data centers. This involves communicating with vendors and internal teams to coordinate and execute the various maintenance tasks that are required to support and grow athenahealth and the needs of the operational teams. We need talented individuals to bring their technical expertise, creative thinking and enthusiasm to help us support and grow this complex environment.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Share responsibility of 24x7 support of data center specific issues with other local team members
  • Manage the entire lifecycle of servers, storage and network equipment within the facility. Including receiving, racking, maintenance, and recycling.

  • Ensure our cable management meets department standards and enforce environment policies

Expected Compensation

$53,000 - $89,000 The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates. Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
