The Data Catalog & Governance Specialist ensures that data feeding the trusted context layer is cataloged, curated, and governed so that AI and agentic systems can rely on it. You will work with the Enterprise Context Architect, Context Graph Engineer, and Ontology Specialist to scan data sources, populate and manage metadata, and establish the governance controls that give context its meaning and trust. You will bridge business and IT, working with data owners and stewards to define and sustain the right catalog structure and standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Shape the catalog. Define the catalog structure, metadata model, and standards (naming, hierarchy, domains, ownership) that support the context layer.
- Configure and scan. Configure and manage hyperscaler-native or third-party catalog and governance tools, and scan and onboard data sources, including technical metadata, schemas, and attributes.
- Curate metadata. Populate and curate business glossaries, terms, descriptions, tags, and classifications, and align them with the semantic layer where needed.
- Apply governance. Define and apply governance controls, including data classification, sensitivity, access policies, quality rules, and lineage.
- Engage stewards. Work with business data owners and stewards to establish roles, workflows, and accountability for metadata and controls.
- Integrate the solution. Collaborate with the architect, graph engineer, and ontology specialist so that cataloged metadata and glossaries inform and stay consistent with the semantic and graph layers.
- Drive adoption. Support adoption through training, documentation, and metrics that show catalog coverage, quality, and value.
Required Qualifications
- ~5-8 years of experience in data cataloging, metadata management, or data governance, including hands‑on tool configuration.
- Experience with leading catalog and governance tools (e.g., Microsoft Purview, AWS Glue Data Catalog / DataZone, Google Dataplex / Knowledge Catalog, Collibra, Alation, Informatica).
- Strong grasp of metadata concepts: technical, business, and operational metadata, glossaries, classification, lineage, and data quality.
- Experience scanning and onboarding diverse data sources (databases, data lakes, warehouses, SaaS applications) and curating at scale.
- Working knowledge of governance frameworks and operating models, including stewardship and ownership; familiarity with privacy and regulatory requirements.
- Understanding of how catalog metadata supports semantic layers, knowledge graphs, and AI/agentic use cases.
Professional Skills
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills; able to structure ambiguous governance and metadata challenges into practical approaches.
- Excellent communication and facilitation skills; effective with business stakeholders, data stewards, and technical teams alike.
- Client‑facing confidence, with the ability to influence, build consensus, and drive change without direct authority.
Preferred
- Familiarity with ontology, taxonomy, and knowledge graph concepts; experience using AI‑assisted tools for metadata enrichment and automation.
- Consulting or professional services background; certifications such as DAMA CDMP or hyperscaler data governance credentials.
