Job description

Experience: 6+ months of practical experience exploring, analyzing, and cleaning real-world datasets; internships and research count

Core Areas: Data Analysis, Data Cleaning, SQL, Python/Pandas, Data Visualization, Dashboards, Criminal Justice Data, Product Launch Analytics

Compensation: $85,000 annually

Travel: Travel to state partners within the continental United States is encouraged approximately once per year and is occasionally required. Trips are expected to include visits to prisons and parole offices.

This opportunity is for a Data Analyst (Entry-Level) to explore complex criminal justice datasets, conduct well-defined analyses, and develop clear visualizations that support efforts to address the drivers of incarceration. Working alongside experienced analysts and teammates across several teams, the position prepares analytical data for state-level product launches and helps assess how those products function and affect justice-system outcomes.

The role uses SQL and Python/Pandas to inspect, clean, and analyze real-world data. Sources include raw and processed criminal justice records from across the country, government reports, and policy documents. Findings are shared with internal teams and presented to state partners alongside teammates, with an emphasis on accuracy, clear explanations, and reusable analytical work.

What You'll Do
  • Explore datasets to identify patterns and insights about American criminal justice systems.
  • Carry out well-scoped analyses with guidance from senior analysts and the State Engagement team.
  • Support product launches by following established launch processes and preparing the analytical data required for each product in each state.
  • Identify and flag data discrepancies during launch preparation.
  • Create clear, well-documented visualizations and dashboards using existing tools.
  • Communicate analytical findings to internal teams and present results to state partners alongside teammates.
  • Analyze trends related to the work to understand how products function and help measure their impact on the justice system.
  • Develop knowledge of assigned states' data, policies, and products, building toward answering new analytical questions with greater independence and selecting appropriate tools.
Qualifications

Required Experience

  • At least 6 months of practical experience exploring, analyzing, and cleaning real-world datasets. Internships and research qualify, and part-time experience counts when the hours total approximately 6 months of full-time work.

Required Skills

  • Working proficiency in SQL, including joins, aggregations, and window functions.
  • Familiarity with Python, specifically Pandas, for data analysis and visualization.
  • Careful inspection of source data and close checking of results to produce trustworthy, reusable data and analyses.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to explain findings clearly and contribute to a knowledgeable, data-oriented working environment.
  • Enthusiasm for working with internal and external partners from diverse backgrounds and worldviews, including government staff, researchers, journalists, technical staff, and criminal justice reform practitioners.
  • Attention to detail, curiosity when investigating unfamiliar or messy data, and flexibility as priorities evolve in a rapidly changing environment.
  • A kind, collaborative approach to working with teammates and partners.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in criminal justice or public policy, or experience working with public‑sector data.
  • Experience with a BI or dashboarding tool such as Looker or Tableau.
  • Familiarity with any part of the data stack: Google Cloud Platform, BigQuery, Looker, Jupyter notebooks, and Python/Pandas.
  • 90% coverage of medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and their dependents.
  • Flexible time off, including 20 days of PTO, 3 days of paid volunteering time, and 13 paid holidays.
  • 12 weeks of paid parental leave.
  • A 401(k) retirement plan with a 5% company match and no vesting period.
  • Complimentary One Medical membership, depending on location.
  • Fertility and family‑forming benefits through Carrot, with a small but growing range of hormonal health and gender‑affirming care benefits.
  • Monthly ClassPass credit for personal wellness.
  • Free mental health support through Talkspace.
  • Access to offices in Oakland and Manhattan.
  • An annual company offsite each spring and other occasional gatherings.
