Job summary

Duke University is seeking a Data Analyst, Energy Management, to transform complex utility and energy data into meaningful insights that drive operational excellence, cost management, and strategic planning across Duke University and Duke Health.

You will join the Building Energy Management Department to analyze data, develop reports and dashboards, and collaborate with stakeholders to improve reporting and business processes while advancing Duke's sustainability goals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mathematics, computer science or a related field.
• 2 years of progressive programming or database administration experience with relational databases.
• Equivalent combination of education and/or experience acceptable.

Responsibilities

• Leverage data to support utility operations, budgeting, sustainability, and billing.
• Collect, manage, validate, and analyze utility consumption and financial data.
• Ensure data quality through monitoring, validation, and troubleshooting.
• Identify data discrepancies and implement corrective actions.
• Create routine and ad hoc reports and dashboards for stakeholders.
• Analyze historical energy usage, weather, and occupancy to support forecasting.
• Develop greenhouse gas emissions reports with Sustainable Duke.

Working within the Building Energy Management Department of Duke Facilities Management, you will transform complex utility and consumption data into meaningful insights that support operational excellence, cost management, sustainability initiatives, and strategic planning.

This role is ideal for a detail-oriented analyst who enjoys working with large datasets, identifying trends, solving data challenges, and partnering with stakeholders to improve reporting and business processes.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a bachelor's degree in mathematics, computer science, or a computer related field or the equivalent coursework or technical training.

Experience

Work requires 2 years of progressive programming or database administration experience to include design, implementation, tuning, backup, recovery, modification and reorganization of relational databases for a complex computer network.

Preferred Qualifications

Three or more years of experience supporting a data-driven organization, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

What You'll Do

• As a Data Analyst, you'll leverage data to support utility operations, budget planning, sustainability efforts, and customer billing across Duke's campuses.
• Analyze & Manage Critical Utility Data
• Collect, manage, validate, and analyze utility consumption and financial data to support accurate utility accounting and billing.
• Ensure data quality and integrity through ongoing monitoring, validation, and troubleshooting efforts.
• Identify data discrepancies and implement corrective actions to improve processes and reporting accuracy.
• Support Utility Billing & Financial Operations
• Utilize the EnergyCAP platform to process utility usage data and generate monthly utility bills.
• Manage billing activities for electricity, emergency power, steam, chilled water, hot water, domestic water, and storm water services.
• Review and record utility invoices from external providers to ensure accurate consumption, demand, and financial reporting.
• Develop Reporting & Analytics
• Create routine and ad hoc reports, dashboards, and analytical measures for Facilities Management and campus stakeholders.
• Analyze historical energy consumption trends, weather data, building occupancy, and construction activities to support forecasting and operational planning.
• Develop greenhouse gas emissions reports in partnership with Sustainable Duke.
• Enhance Data Quality & Operational Efficiency
• Monitor utility meters and investigate inaccurate or anomalous data.
• Coordinate with Facilities Management teams to resolve meter and data collection issues.
• Support utility meter modernization and migration initiatives across campus.

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $61,026.00 to USD $106,641.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
