Job description

Welcome to Clean Wisconsin, an environmental non-profit with offices in Madison and Milwaukee committed to combating climate change and pollution in our air, water and land. We are seeking an experienced and resourceful data expert to serve as our first Data Analyst and Visualization Manager—a full-time position.

From the water we drink to the air we breathe, we know our health is tied to the quality of our environment. Clean Wisconsin’s new Environmental Health Initiative uses scientific analysis to understand how pollution affects families and communities across Wisconsin. This initiative will drive better policies and solutions that protect every Wisconsinite, no matter where they live.

Our Data Analyst and Visualization Manager will be at the center of these exciting efforts. You will analyze data sets to support our evidence-based advocacy approach and create data visualization tools like graphs, charts, maps, infographics, and GIS mapping. Your work will help us present critical data in an accessible way to tell the story of pollution, climate change and public health in Wisconsin.

We anticipate that about 50% of this position will be devoted to supporting Clean Wisconsin’s science department as it analyzes and translates data to be shared with affected communities. The other 50% will be spent creating materials to support advocacy goals at the local, state and federal levels and creating content for our website, social media, and other communications. Our Data Analyst and Visualization Manager will report to the science program director.

Clean Wisconsin is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion in our work and in our hiring practices. We value a team with different perspectives, educational backgrounds, and life experiences, and we prioritize diversity within our team. If you are not sure whether you might be qualified for this position but you think you have something special to contribute, we encourage you to apply. Please also see our statement on diversity, equity and inclusion.

Required Skills and Experience
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret complex data sets and perform statistical analyses to reveal significant explanatory insights.

  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with GIS mapping.
  • Comfort and familiarity with using qualitative data to guide and challenge analysis.
  • Proficiency with data management, statistical analysis, and data visualization program languages such as R or Python.
  • Computer-based environmental modeling experience (e.g., air quality or water quantity modeling) is preferred, along with willingness to develop skills in this area.
  • Experience working with data sets pertaining to environmental issues and risks to public health.
  • Basic understanding of environmental scientific concepts sufficient to perform data analysis under the direction of science program staff.
  • Skill and experience in collaborating in teams of diverse talents and skills sets.
  • Experience working with community groups of different racial backgrounds and income levels.
  • Ability to make compelling oral presentations of data narratives is strongly preferred.
  • Commitment to help create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences.
Traits
  • Deep commitment to Clean Wisconsin’s mission and its goals of addressing climate change and pollution.
  • Inclination towards teamwork and shared success.
  • Creative problem solving.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Willingness and skill in juggling a large workload in a rapidly changing environment.
