Job summary

CALSTART is seeking a motivated intern to join the Drive to Zero team and contribute to freight corridor electrification research. The role focuses on building a knowledge repository, developing quantitative tools, and translating results into clear outputs for policymakers and stakeholders.

You will collaborate across CALSTART teams to refine TCO models for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles and prepare resources for international deployment, with 15–20 hours weekly and pay between $19 and $21 per

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in, or recent completion of, a Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience developing quantitative models (TCO, techno-economic, financial, or policy-impact).
  • Familiarity with web-based tools, databases, dashboards, or digital knowledge platforms.
  • Knowledge of zero emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, transportation electrification, charging infrastructure, or energy systems.
  • Familiarity with clean transportation policies and the role of incentives, taxation, regulation and policy mechanisms in influencing vehicle economics.
  • Experience translating analytical work into intuitive tools or visualizations.
  • Interest in working in an international environment with governments and stakeholders.
  • Weekly Availability: 15-20 hours

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of a knowledge and tools repository focused on freight corridor electrification deployments.
  • Support the development of a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) model assessing policy measures on vehicle economics for MD- and HD-vehicles.
  • Translate analytical results into clear visualizations, summaries, and outputs for policymakers and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Drive to Zero and CALSTART teams to prepare tools for global adaptation and replication.
  • Support other research and analytical activities related to zero-emission MD/HD vehicles, infrastructure, and policy.

Intern Project- What You'll Do:
  • Support the development of a knowledge and tools repository focused on freight corridor electrification deployments, including researching and organizing relevant data and resources, and refining and compiling existing tools.
  • Support the development of a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) model that assesses the impact of different policy measures on vehicle economics (e.g., road charges, feebates, etc.) for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, incorporating key vehicle, energy, infrastructure, operational, and financing parameters.
  • Translate analytical results into clear visualizations, summaries, and user-friendly outputs for policymakers and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with members of the Drive to Zero team and other CALSTART teams to prepare existing tools and resources for global adaptation and replication.
  • Support other research and analytical activities related to zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, infrastructure, and enabling policy as needed.
Intern Project Key Deliverables:

Qualifications:
  • Current enrollment in, or recent completion of, a Master's degree in engineering, energy, transportation, environmental science, economics, data science, public policy, or a related field.
  • Experience developing quantitative models, particularly TCO, techno-economic, financial, or policy-impact models.
  • Familiarity with web-based tools, databases, dashboards, or digital knowledge platforms.
  • Knowledge of zero emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, transportation electrification, charging infrastructure, or energy systems.
  • Familiarity with clean transportation policies and the role of incentives, taxation, regulation, and other policy mechanisms in influencing vehicle economics.

$19 - $21 an hour
