Position Information

The Dallas District Signal Shop is looking for a lead Traffic Signal Engineer III, IV or V to oversee operations of an extensive traffic signal network.This person will be responsible for optimizing the efficiency and safety of traffic flow by managing and adjusting traffic signals. Their roles involve analyzing traffic patterns, developing signal timing plans, implementing changes, and monitoring system performance to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and evaluate new technological equipment.

Salary Range for Each Position Level:

Position Title: Salary Grade / Range: Transportation Engineer III B26: $76,530.00 - $129,430.00 Transportation Engineer IV B27: $84,182.00 - $142,374.00 Transportation Engineer V B28: $92,600.00 - $156,612.00

This position is for one (1) Traffic Signal Operations & Timing Engineer III, IV or V depending on business needs and the applicants' qualifications. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicants' work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, maintenance and research. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties for a Traffic Signal & Timing Engineer III, IV and V include the following activities:

  • Analyze traffic patterns, speeds, and volumes to identify areas for improvement.
  • Develop and implement traffic signal timing plans, including pre-timed, actuated, and coordinated systems.
  • Continuously optimize signal timing plans to minimize delays, stops, and fuel consumption.
  • Monitor traffic flow through traffic management centers, using video surveillance and other data.
  • Respond to incidents, such as accidents or construction, by adjusting signal timing or activating temporary plans.
  • Ensure the proper functioning of traffic signal equipment, including detectors, controllers, and displays.
  • Collect and analyze traffic data, including volumes, speeds, delays, and crash rates.
  • Interpret data to identify patterns, trends, and areas for improvement.
  • Generate reports and presentations to communicate their findings and recommendations.
  • Coordinate with other departments, such as public works, emergency services, and railroad companies to ensure smooth operations.
  • Communicate with the public about traffic signal operations and changes.
  • Develop, implement, and optimize traffic signal timing plans using tools such as Synchro, SimTraffic, and related software.
  • Review and approve traffic signal design plans for in-house, design consultant plans, and developer projects.
  • Ensure safe and efficient operation by integrating traffic signal control with railroad warning systems and considering potential conflicts like train movements and queue clearance. This coordination involves operational studies, understanding operational procedures, and ensuring compatibility of equipment.
  • Stay up to date on advancements in traffic signal technology and operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.


Experience:

Traffic Signal & Timing Engineer III: 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Traffic Signal & Timing Engineer IV: 7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer*

*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
