TxDOT's Dallas District Sign Department is seeking a Transportation Crew Chief at the District Headquarters in Mesquite, TX. The Sign Department is responsible for replacing and maintaining all signs around Dallas County and assisting other sections as needed. Position Description

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

  • Assists during accident and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment.
  • Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
  • Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.

Minimum Qualifications :

Education : High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience : 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certification s :

Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Incident management procedures
  • Inventory / stock control procedures
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Administrative support practices and procedures to include writing, editing and report writing techniques, recording meeting notes, record keeping and records management
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions :

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise and vibration
  • Subject to hazards - moving vehicles / mechanical parts, high places, heat, and chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear - respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium Work : Left up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Standing - prolonged periods of time
  • Lifting - raising objects from lower to higher position / horizontally to a different position

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
