POSITION SUMMARY
The substitute instructional assistant provides continuity of instructional support for students when the regularly assigned instructional assistant is absent. Under the direction of the classroom teacher or appropriate school personnel, the substitute instructional assistant reinforces instruction, assists with classroom routines and learning activities, supervises students, and supports a safe and positive learning environment.
The substitute instructional assistant is expected to demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, dependability, flexibility, and a commitment to student learning and the mission of the school division. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Reports to the assigned school and classroom on time and prepared to fulfill assigned responsibilities.
- Reviews and follows instructional materials, classroom procedures, and directions provided by the classroom teacher or appropriate school personnel.
- Works with individual students and small groups to reinforce learning objectives and standards under the direction of the classroom teacher.
- Assists with learning activities and supports students in understanding directions and completing assigned tasks.
- Supports students in learning and following classroom and school routines and procedures.
- Assists with the development of students’ social and emotional skills.
- Supports students’ academic and behavioral needs and reinforces classroom expectations as directed.
- Maintains a safe, orderly, respectful, and supportive learning environment.
- Supervises students during instructional and assigned non-instructional activities, including lunch, recess, transitions, and bus loading and unloading.
- Maintains classroom and student-related records as assigned.
- Communicates relevant information regarding student needs, classroom concerns, and assigned activities to appropriate school personnel.
- Maintains confidentiality of student and employee information and complies with applicable laws, policies, and procedures.
- Follows established procedures for student safety, emergencies, discipline, technology, and other school operations.
- Exercises fair and ethical judgment, uses appropriate problem-solving and conflict resolution strategies, and seeks assistance when needed.
- Works professionally and cooperatively with students, staff, administrators, and families.
- Maintains a positive, professional, and solution-focused demeanor.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or GED (required).
- Minimum of sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited post-secondary institution or career technical facility; an associate’s degree; or completion of the ParaPro assessment (required).
- Experience working with children (preferred).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of basic instructional practices and strategies for reinforcing student learning.
- Knowledge of student supervision practices, classroom routines, and positive behavior supports.
- Knowledge of basic strategies for supporting students’ social and emotional development.
