Work Schedule: 8a-4:30p, Mon-Fri

Prepare and microscopically examine slides looking for abnormalities such as cancerous cells, pre-cancerous cells, or infectious disease cells.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions

  • Perform duties of a Cytotechnologist.
  • Achieve set benchmarks and standards-Discrepancy rate falls within 2SD of lab mean.
  • Meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) requirements as determined by the section pathologist regarding number of slides screened.
  • Accurately perform, evaluate appropriateness and report tests/analyses requested on patient specimens.
  • Be responsive to special needs and requests of patients/customers.
  • Accurately perform and evaluate staining quality of patient slides.
  • Complete and document quality control 100% of the time.
  • Comply with personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines 100% of the time.
  • Complete and document routine maintenance 100% of the time.
  • Ensure screened slides are available for easy retrieval by direct observation.
  • Complete Human Papillomavirus (HPV) ordering and send out in a timely fashion.
  • Identify problems and initiate immediate follow-up as necessary with the Section Leader, or Medical Director(s).
  • Accommodate patient and laboratory needs by professionally responding to requests for flexibility in duties, schedules, and staffing.
  • Utilize time efficiently to complete assignments and assist coworkers.
  • Use organization and prioritization skills in achieving workload demands.

Develop, implement, and document orientation, training, and education to ensure employee/student competence, provide excellent services and meet accreditation requirements.

  • Assist in training new and existing staff including the review and completion of orientation checklists and skill/training checklists.
  • Complete all training documentation 100% of the time.
  • Complete organizational and departmental competencies 100% of the time.
  • Communicate process/procedural changes in a timely manner and educate staff on the need for the change.
  • Ensure that new procedures and procedure revisions are read and understood.
  • Assist with training and monitoring UNMC cytology students.

Assist in preparation for and participate in inspections, proficiency testing, and maintain records to fulfill the requirements of accrediting agencies.

  • Ensure College of American Pathologists (CAP) inspection meets standards as delineated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.
  • Assist with correcting all College of American Pathologist (CAP) deficiencies by review of inspection results.
  • Complete proficiency testing as assigned and submit by the deadline.
  • Assist in completion of College of American Pathologist (CAP) checklist responses in preparation for on-site or self-inspection as assigned.
  • Assist section leader with problem resolution and follow up reports for proficiency tests as requested.
  • Assist in review/revision of procedure manuals as assigned.
  • Assist with the completion of quality control and Quality Assurance activities.

Maintain and encourage open communication internally and externally to coordinate activities and provide quality laboratory services utilizing appropriate techniques.

Job Requirements

Education

  • Completion of an approved cytotechnology program.

Experience

  • One year's experience preferred.

License/Certifications

  • Current national certification as a cytotechnologist (CT) required.
