General Summary Statement
Performs a variety of routine and complex tasks with emphasis on diagnostic skills relating to exfoliative and aspiration Cytopathology. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of Cytopathology operations, including theoretical aspects of technical procedures as well as department policies and routines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides appropriate clear, accurate & timely intra/extradepartmental communication. Communications are professional & complete within appropriate situation context.
- Demonstrates annual compliance with age specific competency requirements. Participates/monitors quality with appropriate meaningful accurate activities. Contributes to maintaining high department skill and service levels that meet needs. Minimizes errors meeting/exceeding standard without repetitive/significant problems. Over-calls are not excessive and preferably there are no under-calls. Complies with CLIA 88 and CAP quality requirements.
- Enhances efficiency, production and output with appropriate task prioritization. Maintains productivity by screening acceptable target number of slides without exceeding the CLIA slide review limit.
- Monitors and participates in PreAnalytic testing phase laboratory activities to include: Assurance of specimen receipt with identification verification procedures. Evaluation of specimen condition maintaining specimen integrity. Assurance that work areas are equipped and daily tasks completed. Cross-training to perform Cytologic-Prep tasks as needed. Monitors and participates in Analytic testing phase laboratory activities to include: Microscopic evaluation and documentation of specimen adequacy. Evaluation and documentation of technical preparation and processing adequacy. Interpretation of microscopic findings to formulate a diagnosis that correlates with given clinical data and with precision highlighting of pertinent slide findings. Independent, accurate, & timely GYN case reporting if “within normal limits”. Maintaining PM and QC assignments that meet standard. Monitors and participates in PostAnalytic testing phase laboratory activities to include: Appropriate reporting using Bethesda System criteria. Correlation with tissue biopsy and hematology-wright smear findings. Assurance that Medical & Abnormal GYN cases are reviewed by pathologist.
- Maintains areas of responsibility in compliance with accreditation guidelines.
- Uses good judgement during task performance while consulting on non-routine issues. Assessments are carefully formulated with documentation compliance.
- Maintains a safe professional environment observing identification/security procedure. Maintains patient safety initiatives respecting focus and concentration of self/others.
- Monitors bench activities that comply with target TAT and enhance workflow.
- Interactions and demeanor are positive and without conflict. Complies with department and hospital policies, procedures, objectives and standards.
- Enhances team building efforts and supports change with acceptance and flexibility.
- Identifies and resolves routine problems independently using appropriate resources. Improves services with support/involvement in developing new methods and products.
- Arrives at station prepared to begin tasks at start of shift; schedules PTO appropriately; gives report when leaving the work area.
Education Training and Experience
Bachelor degree in Cytology, Medical Technology, or Biology with at least 2 years of experience as a Cytotechnologist in a full service laboratory.
Licensure/Certification
MT (ASCP), MLT (ASCP), HEW or eligible.
