Job summary

NYU Langone Health seeks a licensed cytology technician to perform specimen processing, staining, and quality control in the pathology lab at NYU Langone Health. The role involves handling ThinPrep techniques, Powerpath, and related instruments, ensuring accurate specimen labeling and documentation.

Minimum requirements include NYSDOH licensure and 6–12 months of pathology lab experience, with ASCP HT/HTL certification preferred.

Qualifications

  • NYSDOH-licensed as a Certified Clinical Laboratory histotechnician, histotechnologist, clinical laboratory technician, or clinical laboratory technologist.
  • Associate’s Degree from a relevant program per NYS clinical laboratory licensing requirements.
  • A high school diploma is acceptable only if the individual has the designated experience defined by NYSDOH and has NYS licensure through the grand-parenting pathway.
  • Experience of 6 to 12 months in a pathology laboratory.
  • Exposure to and knowledge of computer systems.
  • ASCP certification as HT or HTL.

Responsibilities

  • Reconciles cytology specimens to ensure proper testing and enters information from requisitions into Powerpath.
  • Grosses and prepares smears, cytospins, and cell blocks.
  • Enters gross descriptions in the Tamtron patient report.
  • Processes cytology specimens including fine needle aspirations, non-gynecological smears, and gynecological monolayers using ThinPrep Pap test technique.
  • Operates the ThinPrep image Processor.
  • Performs all staining protocols: Papanicolaou, differential, and modified rapid Pap stains.
  • Prepares specimens for special stains and handles slide coverslipping and labeling.
  • Maintains stains, reagents, and instruments; logs daily/weekly/monthly activities.
  • Uses and troubleshoots ThinPrep, Leica instrumentation, centrifuges and related equipment.
  • Uses LIS (Powerpath) and Thermo Slidemate AS.
  • Participates in QC/QA and in supply inventory management.

Responsibilities
  • Reconciles cytology specimens to ensure proper testing. Accurately opens, labels, numbers, verifies patient identity, and enters information from the test requisition into Powerpath for each specimen received.
  • Grosses and prepares smears, cytospins and cell blocks.
  • Accurately enters gross description in Tamtron patient report.
  • Processes cytology specimens including fine needle aspirations, non-gynecological smears, and gynecological monolayers using ThinPrep Pap test technique.
  • Properly operates the ThinPrep image Processor.
  • Performs all staining protocols: Papanicolaou stain, differential stain, modified rapid Pap stain.
  • Prepares specimens for all types of special stains. Slide coverslipping and labeling.
  • Assists with maintenance of stains, reagents, and instruments; maintains daily, weekly, and monthly logs.
  • Uses and troubleshoots equipment including ThinPrep instrumentation, Leica instrumentation, and other laboratory centrifuges and instruments.
  • Uses LIS (Powerpath) and Thermo Slidemate AS.
  • Participates in QC/QA and participates in supply inventory management.
  • Maintains open communication with the department supervisor, MD directors, and co-workers regarding important testing information.
  • PIncludes other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • NYSDOH Licensed as a Certified Clinical Laboratory histotechnician, histotechnologist, clinical laboratory technician, or clinical laboratory technologist.
  • An Associate’s Degree from a relevant program as defined by NYS clinical laboratory licensing requirements.
  • A high school diploma is acceptable only if the individual has the designated experience defined by NYSDOH and has obtained NYS licensure through the grand-parenting pathway defined by NYSDOH.
  • Experience of 6 to 12 months in a pathology laboratory.
  • Exposure to and knowledge of computer systems.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • One year of experience in a cytopathology laboratory.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $99,053.60 - $125,117 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentives, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
