Job summary

Quest Diagnostics Inc. is seeking a Cytogenetics Technician I for Shelton, CT (Tuesday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM). The role performs routine lab functions, supports staff, and helps ensure accurate production.

Pay ranges from $24.07 to $31.89 per hour with eligibility for annual bonuses and comprehensive benefits. Qualified candidates have an Associate's degree (or higher) in a science field and 1 year of lab experience.

Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience in a laboratory or related field is required.
  • Knowledge of karyotyping and specimen tracking is preferred.
  • Familiarity with QA incidents and safety requirements is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Log, track, accession and troubleshoot specimens received.
  • Use computer imaging system to karyotype metaphases.
  • Perform routine instrument maintenance and monitor inventory.
  • Document QA incidents and keep areas clean and compliant.
  • Communicate with supervisor regarding issues and department needs.
  • Complete training and competency checklists as assigned.

Cytogenetics Technician I - Shelton, CT, Tuesday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Perform various routine laboratory functions in a precise and accurate fashion to assist the laboratory professional staff and to facilitate production.

Pay range: $24.07 - $31.89 / hour

Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Successful candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance bonus compensation.

Responsibilities:
  • Log, track, accession and troubleshoot specimens being received into the facility.
  • Use computer imaging system to karyotype metaphases.
  • Perform routine instrument maintenance on some equipment.
  • Monitor inventory.
  • Document all information pertinent to work assignments, including all QA incidents.
  • Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional and sanitary condition.
  • Communicate regularly with supervisor and manager regarding issues, concerns and other department needs.
  • Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate.
  • Adheres to all established CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, Quality and laboratory safety requirements.
  • Required to use (a) personal protective equipment, (b) engineering controls and/or (c) work practice controls as directed by management.

Qualifications:
Required Work Experience:

One (1) year previous experience in a laboratory or related field.

Preferred Work Experience:

Two (2) years previous experience in a laboratory or related field.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects: Objects 1 to 10 pounds are lifted and carried frequently; objects 11 to 25 pounds are lifted and carried occasionally; objects 36 to 50 pounds are seldom lifted or carried and objects over 50 pounds are not to be lifted or carried without assistance.
  • Ability to stand and work at the bench for long periods of time.
  • Frequent walking and/or standing.
  • May be required to use a wide variety of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments and apparatuses all of which demand significant manual dexterity.
Knowledge:
  • Basic theoretical and operational job knowledge in laboratory testing.
  • Knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures.
Skills:
  • Must be detail-oriented, have the ability to work independently, establish work priorities and to handle several tasks simultaneously for maximum department efficiency.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills necessary to deal courteously and effectively with supervisors, co-workers and clients.
  • Ability to deal with client information in a confidential manner.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) and Laboratory Information Systems.
