Job summary

Penn State Health Hershey Medical Center is seeking a Cytogenetics Lab Scientist I in Pathology Cytogenetics to perform chromosome analysis, FISH, CMA, and related molecular assays on patient specimens.

The role emphasizes culture, harvesting, slide preparation and analysis of samples from blood, amniotic fluid, tissue, bone marrow and tumors; participation in diagnostic and prognostic workflows within a collaborative academic medical center.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
  • OR a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or related life sciences field with 30 semester hours in biology and chemistry.
  • Must be certified or show proof of eligibility for the Technologist in Cytogenetics, CG(ASCP) board certification exam, upon hire.
  • Must be Technologist in Cytogenetics certified within eighteen (18) months of hire.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Cytogenetics program OR one year clinical laboratory experience in Cytogenetics including primary cell culture and harvest, slide preparation and staining, chromosome analysis, microscopic and image analysis and cytogenetics analysis (karyotype, FISH, CMA).

Responsibilities

  • Perform culturing, harvesting, slide preparation and staining.
  • Analyze chromosome data from peripheral blood, amniotic fluid, tissue, bone marrow and tumors.
  • Conduct chromosome analysis and FISH; CMA experience beneficial.
  • Support diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning through genetic testing.

Cytogenetics Lab Scientist I – Pathology Cytogenetics

Penn State Health -Hershey Medical Center

Performs various techniques for the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of inherited and acquired genetic diseases. This includes culturing, harvesting, slide preparations, and analysis of biologic samples including peripheral blood, amniotic fluid, tissue, bone marrow, and tumors. Performs chromosome analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and/or other molecular assays.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):
  • Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
  • OR a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or related life sciences field from an accredited college/university with a combination of thirty (30) semester hours in biology and chemistry
  • Must be certified or show proof of eligibility for the Technologist in Cytogenetics, CG(ASCP) board certification exam, upon hire.
  • Must be Technologist in Cytogenetics certified within eighteen (18) months of hire.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Cytogenetics program OR one year clinical laboratory experience in Cytogenetics including primary cell culture and harvest, slide preparation and staining, chromosome analysis, microscopic and image analysis and cytogenetics analysis (karyotype, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and/or chromosome microarray (CMA).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION(S):
  • Experience with Chromosome Microarray Analysis (CMA).
