Job Summary
The Cytogenetic Technologist is responsible for performing specialized laboratory procedures related to chromosome analysis, including specimen processing, culturing, staining, karyotyping, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). This role ensures accurate diagnostic results to support patient care while maintaining strict quality control and laboratory standards.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Operations
- Perform specimen setup, harvesting, slide preparation, staining, and microscopic analysis
- Conduct karyotyping and FISH analysis
- Ensure specimen integrity throughout all processing phases
Cell Culture & Analysis
- Establish and maintain cultures from blood, bone marrow, and biopsy samples
- Monitor growth, perform feeding, subculturing, and harvesting decisions
- Identify chromosomal abnormalities, including mosaicism
Technical Procedures
- Perform staining techniques such as Giemsa, Q-, R-, C-banding, and NOR staining
- Operate automated karyotyping systems and imaging tools
- Conduct validation studies for new test methods
Quality Control & Maintenance
- Monitor incubator CO₂ levels and laboratory equipment
- Maintain liquid nitrogen levels and perform equipment maintenance
- Ensure compliance with laboratory safety and quality standards
Documentation & Collaboration
- Maintain accurate records and manage lab inventory
- Train new staff and implement new procedures
- Communicate issues impacting patient care to supervisors
- Utilize Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) effectively
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences or related field
- Certification as:
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or equivalent), or
- Technologist in Cytogenetics (ASCP or equivalent)
- CG(ASCP) certification required
