Job summary

Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL is seeking a full‑time Cytotechnologist for our Specialty Lab. You will screen and evaluate cytology specimens, perform microscopic examinations, prepare and stain slides, and assist pathologists during FNA procedures.

Candidates should have ASCP Cytotechnologist certification or CAHEP-accredited program and at least one year hospital lab experience. The role emphasizes quality assurance, documentation in LIS, and compliance with CLIA/CAP, with a dayshift

Qualifications

  • ASCP Cytotechnologist certification or CAAHEP-accredited cytotechnology program is required/strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of one year hospital-based laboratory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Screen and evaluate cytology specimens for abnormalities.
  • Perform microscopic examination and identify cellular changes.
  • Prepare and stain cytology specimens.
  • Assist pathologists during FNA procedures, including adequacy assessment.
  • Document and report findings in the LIS.
  • Maintain productivity and turnaround times.
  • Correlate findings with clinical history and prior results.
  • Participate in QA/QC programs including cytology-histology correlation.
  • Ensure CLIA/CAP compliance.
  • Maintain equipment, reagents, and work areas.
  • Troubleshoot issues and escalate as needed.
  • Participate in proficiency testing and continuing education.
  • Assist workload distribution and prioritization of cases.
  • Collaborate with pathologists and staff to ensure patient care.
  • Support documentation and billing processes.
  • Participate in special projects and departmental initiatives.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership.

Overview


  • Department: Specialty Lab

  • Schedule: Full Time Days 8a-4:30p

  • Facility: Prime Healthcare St Francis Hospital

  • Location: Evanston, IL 60201


Responsibilities


  • 1) Screen and evaluate gynecologic (Pap tests) and non-gynecologic cytology specimens for abnormalities

  • 2) Perform microscopic examination and identify cellular changes consistent with benign, pre-malignant, and malignant conditions

  • 3) Prepare and stain cytologic specimens using appropriate laboratory techniques

  • 4) Assist pathologists during fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures, including specimen adequacy assessment when applicable

  • 5) Ensure accurate documentation and reporting of findings in the laboratory information system

  • 6) Maintain productivity and turnaround time standards for cytology case review

  • 7) Correlate cytology findings with clinical history and previous pathology results when available

  • 8) Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement programs, including cytology-histology correlation and rescreening requirements

  • 9) Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory standards for cytology practice

  • 10) Maintain equipment, reagents, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized manner

  • 11) Troubleshoot technical or specimen-related issues and elevate as needed

  • 12) Participate in proficiency testing and continuing education to maintain competency

  • 13) Assist with workload distribution and prioritization of cases

  • 14) Collaborate with pathologists, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient care

  • 15) Support documentation and billing processes as required

  • 16) Participate in special projects and departmental initiatives

  • 17) Perform additional duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Pathologist.


Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING


  • 1. ASCP Cytotechnologist certification, or equivalent or Completion of a cytotechnology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), required as stated in CLIA (42 CFR § 493.1483).

  • 2. Minimum of one year hospital-based laboratory experience preferred.

A reasonable compensation estimate for this role, which includes estimated wages, benefits, and other forms of compensation, is $42.00 to $56.53. The exact starting compensation to be offered will be determined at the time of selecting an applicant for hire, in which a wide range of factors will be considered, including but not limited to, skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials and licensure.
