Job description

Wisewire is seeking a Cybersecurity Governance, Risk, and Compliance Instructor for a Grand Rapids-based adult workforce training program. This role will prepare adult learners for entry-level opportunities in cybersecurity governance, risk management, compliance, IT risk, and related analyst positions while supporting readiness for the CompTIA Security+ and ISC² Certified in Cybersecurity certifications.

The instructor will deliver foundational cybersecurity instruction alongside practical, workplace-based learning in areas such as risk assessment, security controls, policy development, audit support, third-party risk, incident-response planning, and communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders. Learners will build the technical literacy needed to understand cybersecurity findings, evaluate their organizational impact, and recommend appropriate action.

Many learners will be transitioning into technology careers, may be new to the field, and may be balancing work, family, financial pressures, or other significant responsibilities. The instructor will combine subject-matter expertise with a structured, inclusive, and learner-centered approach that supports confidence, persistence, certification readiness, and career momentum without compromising instructional rigor.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver instruction in cybersecurity governance, risk management, compliance, and foundational security concepts.
  • Facilitate applied activities such as risk assessments, risk registers, control mapping, policy development, audit evidence, security questionnaires, and vendor risk reviews.
  • Teach learners how to interpret and apply cybersecurity frameworks and standards, including NIST CSF, ISO 27001, SOC 2, and CIS Controls.
  • Help learners understand how technical findings, such as vulnerability scan results, access-control issues, and cloud exposures, translate into organizational risk.
  • Guide learners in drafting clear findings, recommendations, policies, procedures, and other workplace documentation.
  • Facilitate incident response planning exercises and tabletop exercises.
  • Connect cybersecurity concepts to business operations, regulatory requirements, privacy, AI governance, and third-party risk.
  • Support preparation for CompTIA Security+ and ISC² Certified in Cybersecurity examinations.
  • Provide feedback on both technical understanding and professional skills, including analytical reasoning, documentation, presentation, and stakeholder communication.
  • Collaborate with program leadership to monitor learner progress, adjust pacing, and identify learners requiring additional support.
  • Maintain awareness of developments in cybersecurity governance, regulatory compliance, data privacy, and emerging technology risk.
Qualifications
  • Professional experience in cybersecurity governance, risk management, compliance, IT audit, technology risk, data privacy, third-party risk, or a related field
  • Experience teaching, training, mentoring, or facilitating learning for adults or emerging professionals
  • Working knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks and standards such as NIST CSF, ISO 27001, SOC 2, CIS Controls, or NIST 800-53
  • Experience supporting risk assessments, audits, control reviews, vendor risk assessments, security questionnaires, policy development, or compliance-readiness activities
  • Ability to translate technical cybersecurity findings into clear risk, business, and compliance implications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts to learners with varied levels of technical experience
  • Familiarity with CompTIA Security+ and ISC² Certified in Cybersecurity certification objectives
  • Ability to create a structured, supportive, and inclusive learning environment that builds confidence while maintaining appropriate rigor
  • Experience with applied, project-based, or scenario-based instruction is preferred
  • A current cybersecurity, audit, risk, or compliance certification, such as Security+, ISC² CC, CISA, CRISC, CGRC, or CISSP, is preferred
  • Experience in workforce training, community college, technical bootcamp, higher education, or professional learning is preferred
  • Must be able to support regular in-person instruction in the Grand Rapids area (Tuesday and Wednesday mornings)
  • Freelance 1099 Position
  • Estimated Start Date: August 1, 2026
  • Length of contract: ~ 12 months
