Job summary

Roanoke County is seeking a Cybersecurity Engineer to design, implement, and continuously improve the County’s security infrastructure. You will protect information systems by engineering security controls, conducting threat/vulnerability management, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local standards.

The role involves coordinating with IT leadership, SOC partners, and cross-functional teams to mature cyber defenses, develop secure architectures, and drive security initiatives

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a computer-related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in IT or information security.
• Valid Virginia driver’s license with a good driving record; CompTIA Security+ and CISSP or equivalent certification.
• Knowledge of NIST CSF, ISO 27001, CIS Controls, MITRE ATT&CK, regulatory requirements (HIPAA, PCI-DSS, CJIS).
• Willingness to provide after-hours emergency support and participate in on-call as needed.

Responsibilities

• Ensure security requirements are included in enterprise architecture, system design, and IT projects; embed secure configurations and best practices.
• Design, implement, and optimize security for network and system architectures (firewalls, IDS/IPS, endpoint security, encryption, authentication).
• Perform regular security assessments, penetration testing, configuration reviews, and vulnerability management; analyze logs to detect threats.
• Assess effectiveness of controls, recommend risk mitigation, ensure compliance with policies and standards.
• Coordinate with leadership and SOC to respond to cyber incidents and improve incident response processes.
