Job summary

Sheppard Pratt is seeking a Cybersecurity Engineer for an on-site role in Towson, MD. You will implement and enhance cybersecurity technologies across on-prem and cloud environments, working with IT and applications teams to mitigate risks and strengthen incident response capabilities.

The role requires hands-on experience with Defender, Sentinel, and Purview, plus strong scripting skills and a security-first mindset to support the organization’s multi-year cybersecurity roadmap.

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, IT, CS or related field.
  • Four to six years of progressive cybersecurity engineering experience.
  • Hands-on experience configuring or supporting security controls.

Responsibilities

  • Implement, configure, support, and maintain the organization’s cybersecurity toolset (Defender, Sentinel, Purview).
  • Support initiatives from the three-year cybersecurity roadmap with practical technical solutions.
  • Build and maintain security automations, detections, and incident response playbooks.
  • Contribute to security standards, configurations, and engineering patterns for IT Infra, Operations, and Applications teams.
  • Provide hands-on support for on-premises and cloud security controls in a hybrid AD environment (Azure).
  • Collaborate with IT Infrastructure, Operations and Applications teams to embed security into designs and migrations.
  • Evaluate tooling and architectures against best practices; recommend improvements.
  • Support incident response activities including triage, containment, remediation, and post-incident improvements.

Description

The Cybersecurity Engineer is a hands-on technical role that supports the success of the organization’s cybersecurity program. This position is responsible for implementing, configuring, maintaining, and improving cybersecurity technologies, automations, and processes that support the organization’s multi-year cybersecurity strategic roadmap. The role contributes to cybersecurity engineering standards and works closely with IT and application teams to help mitigate risks across both on-premises and cloud environments. In addition, this position supports incident response activities, including security investigations, containment, remediation, and continuous improvement of response workflows.

What to expect.

  • Implement, configure, support, and maintain the organization’s cybersecurity toolset, with a primary focus on Microsoft Defender (EDR/XDR, MDR), Microsoft Sentinel (SIEM/SOAR), and Microsoft Purview.
  • Support key initiatives from the organization’s three-year cybersecurity strategic roadmap by translating objectives into practical technical solutions.
  • Build and maintain security automations, detections, and response playbooks to improve efficiency, consistency, and response time.
  • Contribute to the development, documentation, and maintenance of technical cybersecurity standards, configurations, and engineering patterns that guide IT Infrastructure, Operations, and Applications teams.
  • Provide hands‑on support for Microsoft on‑premises and cloud security controls within a hybrid Active Directory environment transitioning to Azure and cloud‑native services.
  • Collaborate closely with IT Infrastructure, Operations, and Applications teams to ensure security is embedded into system designs, migrations, and operational processes.
  • Evaluate security tooling, configurations, and architectures against industry best practices and evolving threats, and recommend improvements where appropriate.
  • Support incident response activities, including alert triage, investigation, containment, remediation, documentation, and post‑incident improvement using Microsoft Defender/XDR and related security tools.
  • Maintain clear technical documentation for security platforms, configurations, operational procedures, and team knowledge sharing to support consistent cybersecurity operations and engineering practices.

Pay for this position is determined on a number of factors, including but not limited to, years and level of related experience. The pay range for this position is between $ 87,966.94 to $144,976.21 .

What we need from you.

  • Bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, information technology, computer science, or a related field required. In lieu of a bachelor's degree, equivalent formal training or certification (e.g. CISSP) may be accepted.
  • Four to six years of progressive experience in cybersecurity engineering, IT infrastructure engineering, systems administration, cloud engineering, or related technical roles, with hands‑on experience implementing or supporting security controls required.
    • Hands‑on experience configuring, supporting, and improving Microsoft security platforms, including Microsoft Defender, Sentinel, and Purview, or comparable enterprise security technologies.
    • Demonstrated experience securing hybrid environments involving on‑prem Active Directory and cloud identity platforms such as Azure AD (Entra ID).
    • Experience supporting security investigations, containment actions, and remediation workflows using Microsoft Defender/XDR or comparable enterprise detection and response tools.
  • Skills Required: Strong understanding of security engineering principles, including endpoint protection, identity security, logging and monitoring, threat detection, incident response, and remediation.
    • Proficiency with PowerShell and experience with additional scripting or automation languages (e.g., Python, KQL) to support security operations and automation.
    • Familiarity with security frameworks and best practices (such as NIST, CIS, or ISO 27001) and the ability to translate them into technical controls.
    • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to design scalable, secure solutions.
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across technical and non‑technical teams and explain security concepts clearly to different audiences.
    • General understanding of healthcare regulatory frameworks such as HIPAA and HITECH, with a willingness to learn and apply additional standards and compliance requirements as needed.
