This role involves executing system security design, development, testing, and implementation, with a strong focus on integrating AI/ML into existing and new cybersecurity frameworks. The Cyber AI Engineer will identify, design, and execute security projects that improve detection and response capabilities through intelligent automation. They will also conduct software and systems engineering and research to develop new capabilities with fully integrated cybersecurity, alongside comprehensive technology research to evaluate potential vulnerabilities in the cyber domain, including those related to AI systems themselves.

  • Design and implement AI/ML models for cybersecurity applications, such as intrusion detection, malware analysis, vulnerability assessment, and predictive security.
  • Leverage AI/ML to enhance real-time threat detection, anomaly identification, and predictive security capabilities.
  • Analyze large datasets using AI/ML techniques to identify patterns and anomalies indicative of cyber threats.
  • Develop algorithms specifically designed to identify and protect against cybersecurity attacks.
  • Contribute to the automation of cybersecurity tasks through the application of AI and scripting.
  • Provide cybersecurity planning, assessment, risk analysis, and risk management across all domains, with a view to AI-driven security strategies.
  • Define baseline system security requirements and determine if system analysis meets cybersecurity requirements, including secure AI deployments.
  • Determine and translate functional requirements and specifications into technical solutions for AI-powered security systems.
  • Develops and implements test plans to address security specifications and requirements for AI-driven security tools.
  • Performs operational testing and validation of AI security models.
  • Participate in the Change Management process, including review of change requests related to AI system integration.
  • Works on project teams responsible for engineering and packaging software releases, ensuring AI components are securely integrated within the production environment.
  • Monitors and provides input for software updates and patches, vendor licensing management, security planning, and risk management, with an emphasis on AI-specific security considerations.

Minimum Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering/science discipline: Minimum 7 years of relevant experience.
  • OR Master's degree in engineering/science discipline: Minimum 5 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Job Requirements
  • Experience and/or certifications associated with RMF, ICD 503, NIST SP800-53 or DCID 6/3.
  • Experience in continuous authorization practices.
  • Experience applying NIST 800-53 security controls to OT environments.
  • Experience designing securing OT environments in accordance with NIST SP 800-82.
  • Experience applying risk management framework to OT systems.
  • Knowledge of systems security engineering (SSE) principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of OT system threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Knowledge of Risk Management Framework requirements and process.
  • Hold at least one of the following certifications: Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Global Information Security Professional (GISP), or the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) or other certifications exemplifying skill sets such as those described in DOD Instruction 8570.1 Information Assurance Management (IAM) Level III proficiency.
  • Knowledge of DOE and NNSA mission and cybersecurity requirements.
  • Knowledge of laws, policies, procedures, or governance relevant to cybersecurity for critical infrastructures.
  • Experience with machine learning algorithms, deep learning, and natural language processing in a cybersecurity context.
  • Familiarity with AI security concepts, including identifying bugs in code, understanding system vulnerabilities through AI, and securing AI models from malicious use.
  • Experience with AI monitoring and real-time threat detection systems.
  • Understanding of AI governance, ethical considerations, and responsible AI usage in cybersecurity.
  • Experience with Governance, Risk, and Compliance platforms and AI implementations within these environments.
