Job summary

Peak Performers, partnering with a state government agency, seeks a Cybersecurity Analyst III in Austin, TX. You will lead advanced threat detection, incident response, and cloud security efforts across Azure, AWS, and Google while guiding junior analysts.

Role requires 8+ years in cybersecurity, strong NIST/CIS knowledge, and preferred master’s degree with CISSP or similar certs. Hybrid schedule; 8:00–5:00; 1+ year contract with weekly payroll and background checks.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Engineering, or a related field, with 8+ years in cybersecurity or digital forensics engineering.
• 6+ years hands-on experience with SIEM, EDR/XDR, DLP, SOAR, cloud security, email threat management, and vulnerability management tools.
• 5+ years leading incident response, forensic investigations, malware analysis, and security engineering, with knowledge of NIST, CIS Controls, Zero Trust.
• Experience producing detailed cyber threat intelligence reports and presenting findings to technical and non-technical audiences. AI governance experience preferred.
• Master’s degree in cybersecurity or related field and advanced certifications preferred (CISSP, GCIH, GCIA, GCFA, CEH, CySA+, CCSP).

Responsibilities

• Lead advanced threat detection engineering and SIEM tuning, develop correlation rules, proactive threat hunting, and manage core cybersecurity tools.
• Direct incident response activities including forensics, malware analysis, containment, eradication, and reporting.
• Manage enterprise vulnerability programs using Tenable, Qualys, and similar tools, with prioritization and remediation planning.
• Develop and enforce cloud security and Zero Trust controls across Azure, M365, AWS, and Google, aligning with NIST, CIS Controls, ISO, PCI, SOC.
• Support AI governance and security by evaluating AI-related risks, enforcing policies, identifying Shadow AI, and ensuring approved AI tools are used securely. Mentor junior analysts and advise leadership.

Job description

Peak Performers has partnered with a state government agency to assist in their search for a temporary Cybersecurity Analyst III in Austin, Texas. In this position, you will be responsible for highly advanced cybersecurity engineering, incident response, threat detection, digital forensics, vulnerability management, and enterprise security operations.

Major duties

• Lead advanced threat detection engineering, SIEM tuning, correlation rule development, proactive threat hunting, and management of core cybersecurity tools including SIEM, EDR/XDR, SOAR, DLP, CASB, email threat protection, and cloud security systems.
• Direct incident response activities, including forensic and malware analysis, containment, eradication, executive reporting, and development of detailed security intelligence and forensic reports.
• Manage enterprise vulnerability programs using tools such as Tenable, Qualys, or similar platforms, including vulnerability prioritization and remediation planning.
• Develop and enforce cloud security and Zero Trust controls across environments such as Azure, Microsoft 365, AWS, and Google, while aligning security operations with NIST, CIS Controls, ISO, PCI, SOC, and related frameworks.
• Support AI governance and security by evaluating AI-related risks, enforcing responsible-use standards, identifying unmanaged or Shadow AI activity, and ensuring approved AI tools are used securely and in compliance with organizational requirements. Mentor junior analysts and serve as a senior cybersecurity advisor to leadership.

What are we looking for?

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Engineering, or a related field, along with 8+ years of professional cybersecurity or digital forensics engineering experience.
• 6+ years of hands‑on experience with SIEM, EDR/XDR, DLP, SOAR, cloud security, email threat management, and vulnerability management tools.
• 5+ years of experience leading incident response, forensic investigations, malware analysis, and security engineering, with strong knowledge of NIST, CIS Controls, Zero Trust, and enterprise security principles.
• Experience producing detailed cyber threat intelligence reports and presenting findings to technical and non‑technical audiences. Experience with AI governance, AI security controls, responsible-use policies, or Shadow AI identification is preferred.
• A master’s degree in a cybersecurity or information technology‑related field and advanced certifications such as CISSP, GCIH, GCIA, GCFA, CEH, CySA+, or CCSP are preferred.

• Rate: $94/hr

• Standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, excluding state holidays
• Contract Length: 1+ year
