Job summary

1872 Consulting in Austin, TX is seeking a Cybersecurity Engineer II with a primary focus on Vulnerability Management. You will join a Security Governance team, working across risk assessments, security controls, and broader cybersecurity initiatives to protect systems.

The role requires strong hands‑on experience with vulnerability management, familiarity with Windows/Azure, some Linux, and the ability to automate tasks with PowerShell.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of cybersecurity engineering or vulnerability management experience.
  • Hands-on experience with vulnerability assessment and management.
  • Experience with enterprise vulnerability tools such as Tenable, Qualys, Rapid7 or Defender Vulnerability Management.
  • Experience performing security risk assessments and working with security frameworks.
  • Strong PowerShell scripting experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and mature vulnerability management and security assessment programs.
  • Identify, assess, prioritize, and track vulnerabilities through remediation.
  • Develop vulnerability management metrics, procedures, and supporting documentation.
  • Monitor emerging threats and coordinate remediation activities.
  • Perform security risk assessments for new technologies, IT projects, and third‑party vendors.
  • Respond to client and partner security assessments, questionnaires, and audits.
  • Apply security frameworks such as NIST, ISO 27001, and SOC 2.
  • Develop and use PowerShell scripts to automate security and operational tasks.
  • Collaborate with Security Architecture and other teams to implement security controls.
  • Provide information security expertise to technical teams and leadership.
  • Help develop and maintain security policies and guidelines.
  • Assist with long‑term information security strategy and issue management.
  • Mentor junior cybersecurity engineers.
  • Contribute to IAM, endpoint security, authentication, firewalls, IDS/IPS, encryption, and log analysis initiatives.

Cybersecurity Engineer II – Vulnerability Management

Location: Austin, TX

Work Schedule: Hybrid – 3 days onsite (Tuesday–Thursday), 2 days remote (Monday/Friday)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Cybersecurity Engineer II to join a growing Security Governance team in Austin. This position will have a primary focus on Vulnerability Management, while also supporting security risk assessments, security controls, and broader cybersecurity initiatives.

You will join a collaborative team of cybersecurity engineers responsible for identifying and managing vulnerabilities, conducting risk assessments, supporting security frameworks and compliance activities, and partnering with technical teams across the organization.

The environment is primarily Microsoft-based, including Azure and Windows, with some Linux systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and mature vulnerability management and security assessment programs
  • Identify, assess, prioritize, and track vulnerabilities through remediation
  • Develop vulnerability management metrics, procedures, and supporting documentation
  • Monitor emerging threats and vulnerabilities and coordinate appropriate remediation activities
  • Perform security risk assessments for new technologies, IT projects, and third‑party vendors
  • Respond to client and partner security assessments, questionnaires, and audits
  • Apply security frameworks and standards including NIST, ISO 27001, and SOC 2
  • Develop and use PowerShell scripts to automate security and operational processes
  • Partner with Security Architecture and other technical teams to evaluate, recommend, and implement security technologies and controls
  • Provide information security expertise to technical teams, business leadership, and other stakeholders
  • Support the development and maintenance of security policies, standards, processes, and guidelines
  • Assist with long‑term information security strategy, planning, issue management, exceptions, and findings
  • Support and mentor junior cybersecurity engineers
  • Contribute to additional security initiatives involving IAM, endpoint security, authentication, firewalls, IDS/IPS, encryption, and log analysis
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in Cybersecurity Engineering, Security Operations Engineering, Vulnerability Management, IT Risk Management, or a similar security function
  • Strong hands‑on experience with vulnerability assessment and vulnerability management
  • Experience using enterprise vulnerability management technologies such as Tenable, Qualys, Rapid7, Microsoft Defender Vulnerability Management, or similar tools
  • Hands‑on experience conducting security risk assessments
  • Working knowledge and practical experience with security frameworks including:
  • NIST
  • ISO 27001
  • SOC 2
  • Strong PowerShell scripting experience, including writing scripts to automate security or operational tasks
  • Experience working within hybrid‑cloud environments
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure and Windows environments
  • Working knowledge of Linux environments
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain security risks and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Azure security technologies such as Microsoft Defender for Cloud and Microsoft Entra ID
  • Experience with Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) and anti‑malware technologies
  • Identity and Access Management (IAM) and authentication systems experience
  • Experience with firewalls, IDS/IPS, encryption, and log analysis
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
  • Cybersecurity certifications such as CISSP, CEH, OSCP, or similar
