Position Overview

The position is responsible for providing expert perioperative patient care through the use of equipment and instrumentation. The role functions as a scrub assistant to the physician performing operative or invasive procedures, works under the direction of a Registered Nurse, and serves as a resource for other staff. The candidate must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care and contribute to unit operations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Graduate of a Surgical Technologist Program
  • Licenses/Certifications: Certified in Basic Life Support
  • Current Certification as a Surgical Technologist by the National Board of Surgical Technology & Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • Experience:
    • New Grad <1 year
    • Surg Tech I: 1 year
    • Surg Tech II: 2‑4 years
    • Surg Tech III: 5+ years
Principal Accountabilities
  • Support unit goals and facilitate operations by serving as a resource specialist for an assigned operating room area or specialty service
  • Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic technique, advanced surgical techniques, and patient care for elective and emergency situations, performing duties at an expert level based on patient needs
  • Verify functioning and availability of supplies, instruments, and equipment prior to procedures, applying aseptic principles for optimal patient care
  • Ensure safe patient care by adhering to policies, procedures, and standards of care, including time management, supply management, and accuracy of practice within budgetary specifications
  • Promote professional growth and development by meeting mandatory/continuing education requirements, supporting department goals, and serving as a preceptor, mentor, or resource for less experienced staff; provide orientation and in‑service training
  • Demonstrate a commitment to caring for every member of the community through compassionate, personalized experiences, and model Memorial Hermann’s service standards by providing safe, caring, personalized, and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues
  • Assist with other duties as assigned
