Job summary

PPG is seeking a Customer Support Chemist to apply coatings technology, polymer chemistry and crosslinking principles to support decorative automotive coatings. You will be a product-line expert, solving problems and communicating results to customers, suppliers, Marketing, plant and quality personnel.

You will work onsite at our Cleveland, OH facility, report to the S&T Customer Support Manager, and contribute to product launches, field troubleshooting, and continuous improvement

Qualifications

• BS in Chemistry or related field with 5+ years of related experience.
• Experience in coatings/paints or similar industries preferred.
• Ability to troubleshoot and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to safety protocols in a laboratory setting.
• Conduct development work: formulation, application, and testing for decorative coatings.
• Collaborate with manager to set project goals and timelines.
• Coordinate with commercial and field teams for ongoing projects.
• Support product/process troubleshooting using root cause analysis and BPI tools; travel as needed.
• Document results with coatings reports and project updates.
• Work with regional labs and R&D on new/improved formulations.
• Simulate customer line conditions to accelerate launches.
• Assist with formula filing and launch process steps.

Job description

As a Customer Support Chemist, you will use your knowledge of coatings technology, polymer, and crosslinking chemistries. You will be considered one of the product-line experts and be able to apply your broad understanding of formulation practices to contribute to the profit objectives of the market segment while meeting customer expectations and requirements. To be most successful, you will need to use fundamental principles to solve problems, identify root causes using BPI tools, and demonstrate effective communication and listening skills. You will also serve as a technical resource for others outside of the project areas by interacting with customers, suppliers, Marketing, plant, and quality personnel. You will also need to be able to search and interpret literature, be cognizant of competitor technology, and intellectual property. Focusing on results, driving change, promoting teamwork and trust, and demonstrating customer and market understanding are key attributes.

You will work onsite at our Cleveland, OH facility in the decorative automotive segment and will report to the S&T Customer Support Manager for the team.

Responsibilities:

• Adhere to all PPG safety protocols and encourage a broad safety culture in a laboratory work environment.

• Conduct development work such as the formulation, application, and testing for all layers in the decorative parts market segment.

• Work with manager in setting smart project goals, milestones against bold timelines.

• Work with the commercial and the field organization informally and formally for ongoing project work.

• Support product and process troubleshooting and apply root cause analysis and BPI tools to lead resolution of manufacturing and field issues. Travel to customer or other PPG sites may be occasionally necessary.

• Maintain results through written and verbal summaries, coatings reports, test drill presentations, and project updates.

• Work with regional labs; and together with R&D and other departments on the development and improvement of new and existing formulations.

• Simulate customer line conditions to troubleshoot field issues and to increase the speed and success rate of product launches.

• Help with FLC, Secure Launch process (formula filing, conversion planning, PDCA).

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Science Degree in Chemistry or related Engineering or Science field with 5+ years of related experience.

• Work experience in coatings, paints, or similar industries is strongly preferred
