Job summary

Hy-Vee in Johnston, IA is seeking a friendly Checker to operate the register, assist customers, and support store operations. You’ll handle payments, follow guidelines for WIC/food stamps, and help with bagging and promotions.

As a key touchpoint, you’ll contribute to a positive shopping experience by staying knowledgeable about products, prices, and store policies while maintaining a clean, organized checkout area.

Responsibilities

• Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile and making every visit a great one
• Operate the cash register accurately and process all payment types including cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, and food assistance programs
• Count back change, issue receipts, and provide refunds or credit memorandums as needed
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines regarding WIC, food stamps, and sale of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets
• Assist with bagging, courtesy support, and drive-up or carry-out service as needed
• Stay knowledgeable of item lookup numbers, department numbers, item features, and weekly ad price changes
• Stock, face, and rotate merchandise, keep shelves clean, and assist customers to items when requested
• Maintain clean register area, monitor supplies, and report cash discrepancies
• Verify register balances at start and end of shifts where applicable
• Communicate clearly by phone or intercom and answer customer questions, escalating as needed
• Remain aware of surroundings to support store safety and security
• Support store management with displays and special promotions
• Perform other store duties and special projects as assigned
• Adhere to personal hygiene, dress standards, and Hy-Vee policies
