Job summary

Eaton’s Power Reliability Division in South Milwaukee, WI is seeking a Custom Products Design Engineer to design and develop custom underground distribution switchgear products. You will prepare BOMs, drawings, and customer-specific docs while collaborating with Marketing, Proposals, SAP, and manufacturing teams to ensure successful delivery.

The role involves estimating design effort and costs, providing technical support to Sales, and leading continuous improvement efforts across engineering

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Mechanical engineering or Electrical engineering required.
• Minimum of Six (6) months of experience in CAD systems such as Autodesk Inventor or Solid Works.
• Minimum of Six (6) months of experience reading and interpreting electrical drawings/schematics.
• Relocation benefits are being offered for this position. Candidates that currently reside or are willing to relocate within the immediate geographical area of 50 miles of South Milwaukee, WI will be considered.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop custom Underground Distribution Switchgear products of moderate complexity in accordance with established engineering practices and company standards, including bills of material (BOMs), detail and assembly drawings, and customer-specific documentation.
• Partner with Marketing and Proposals teams to review specifications, evaluate customer requirements, and support the development of technical solutions.
• Prepare, process, and implement Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), ensuring accurate documentation and entry into SAP.
• Estimate design effort, project scope, and product costs for complex custom products and systems.
• Provide technical expertise to Marketing and Sales teams by responding to customer inquiries, supporting equipment applications, resolving technical issues, and conducting engineering analyses.
• Collaborate closely with Scheduling, Purchasing, Manufacturing Engineering, Production Control, Quality Assurance, and Operations to address technical challenges and ensure successful execution of custom designs.
• Support Manufacturing Engineering and production personnel in the successful fabrication, assembly, testing, and implementation of new custom-designed products.
• Lead root cause investigations and corrective actions for customer complaints, product failures, and material nonconformance issues.
• Identify opportunities for product and process improvements, and lead continuous improvement initiatives that enhance quality, efficiency, and overall team performance.

The expected annual salary range for this role is $71000 - $105000 a year.

Qualifications

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Mechanical engineering or Electrical engineering required.
• Minimum of Six (6) months of experience in CAD systems such as Autodesk Inventor or Solid Works.
• Minimum of Six (6) months of experience reading and interpreting electrical drawings/schematics.
• Relocation benefits are being offered for this position. Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in custom engineering design and manufacturing processes.
• Experience in technical applications of AI.
• Proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD software used in the design of mechanical and electromechanical systems.
• Working knowledge of industry-recognized drafting standards, CAD methodologies, and engineering best practices.
• Experience creating, managing, and maintaining engineering design data within an ERP system.
• Familiarity with Finite Element Analysis (FEA), 3D modeling, detailing, and layout drafting techniques.
• Knowledge of power systems, distribution switchgear products and applications, and/or industrial automation and control systems.
• Experience with or working knowledge of programming languages such as VBA, Python, or Java.
