Job summary

Washington County Public Schools seeks a Custodian for Smithsburg High School to maintain facilities and perform cleaning and basic maintenance tasks. The role operates on an 8‑hour, 12‑month schedule with a 2nd shift and reports to the Facilities Operations Manager.

Responsibilities

Minimum Requirements

• High School Diploma/GED or has any combination of education, training, or experience that would qualify the candidate to successfully perform in the position.
• Capable of climbing stairs, ladders, etc., carrying reasonable loads, shoveling snow, operating gas powered equipment, and other manual tasks as required to maintain the buildings in first-class condition.
• Ability to follow oral or simple written instructions.
• Willingness to participate in in-service training programs.

Preferred Qualifications

Role Responsibilities

• Perform operations as scrubbing, mopping, sweeping, waxing, dusting, etc., involved in the cleaning of school buildings by using hand or mechanical cleaning tools.
• Provide a presence to protect school against fire, discourage theft, and/or damage by trespassers.
• Care for and/or checks (as required in the site schedule) the heating/air conditioning system whether it is low pressure, steam, hot air, electric, or oil fired system.
• Assist with and/or make minor emergency repairs.
• Clean and care for the grounds.
• Keep work records and inventory of custodial equipment and supplies, and order supplies when necessary.
• Demonstrate courteous and professional demeanor to all stakeholders of Washington County Public Schools.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
