Job summary

The Niskayuna Central School District is accepting applications for a probationary Custodian - Second Shift at Niskayuna High School. You will perform routine cleaning and maintenance tasks to keep facilities in good order and safety.

Responsibilities include painting, floor care, minor repairs, snow removal, and various grounds tasks. Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent, or six months of related maintenance experience.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED or higher is preferred.
• Six months experience in building maintenance or cleaning, carpentry, plumbing, painting, or related trades.

Responsibilities

• Paints rooms and equipment.
• Sweeps and mops floors and stairs.
• Dusts desks, woodwork, furniture and equipment.
• Washes windows, walls, blackboards, sinks and other fixtures.
• Polishes furniture and metal furnishings.
• Empties waste baskets and disposes of rubbish.
• Clears snow and ice from walks and driveways.
• Mows lawns, trims shrubs, rakes leaves, and performs grounds tasks.
• Operates heating system and handles related duties.
• Delivers packages and messages.
• Checks clocks and bells operation.
• Puts out and takes in traffic safety signs.
• Arranges chairs and tables for events.
• Repairs window shades and replaces bulbs and towels.
• Monitors buildings during night/weekend shifts.
• Prepares and maintains records and reports.

ASSIGNMENT: Niskayuna High School; 12 months per year; 40.00 hours per week.

GENERAL INFORMATION:This is routine manual work involving responsibility for the efficient and economic performance of semi-skilled cleaning and maintenance tasks for municipal buildings, grounds, and equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of a superior in accordance with established policies, but considerable leeway is permitted for the exercise of independent judgment. General supervision may be exercised over the work of subordinate cleaning or maintenance personnel. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

• Paints rooms and equipment, repairs furniture and makes minor plumbing, electrical and carpentry repairs;
• Sweeps and mops floors and stairs;
• Dusts desks, woodwork, furniture and other equipment;
• Washes windows, walls, blackboards, sinks and other fixtures;
• Polishes furniture and metal furnishings;
• Empties waste baskets, collects and disposes of rubbish;
• Clears snow and ice from walks and driveways;
• Mows lawns, trims shrubs, rakes leaves, and performs a variety of other ground-keeping tasks;
• Operates a coal or oil low pressure heating system, including firing and removing ash;
• Delivers packages and messages;
• Checks operation of clocks and bells;
• Puts out and takes in traffic safety signs;
• Arranges chairs and tables and other equipment for special use of buildings;
• Repairs window shades, replaces light bulbs, soap and towels;
• When assigned to night or weekend duty, polices buildings and boiler rooms;
• Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports;
• Performs a variety of related tasks as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Graduation from High School or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma; OR
2. Six months expereince in building maintenance or cleaning, carpentry, plumbing, painting, or other trades work.
