Job summary

Charles W. Lewis Middle School in Gloucester Township, NJ seeks a PM Custodian to maintain a clean, safe school environment after hours. The role supports building operations, requiring teamwork, reliability and physical stamina.

Responsibilities include cleaning, outside grounds work and basic maintenance, with duties directed by the Facilities Supervisor, Principal and Head Custodian. The position is full-time and paid 12-months per year, with compensation negotiated with the GTSPA.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Under supervision, performs custodial duties to maintain cleanliness, order, sanitation and safety of the building.
• Wears clean, appropriate uniform and uses cleaning equipment properly.
• Performs outside services including snow removal, lawn work, debris removal, and rearrangement/delivery of supplies.
• Operates cleaning equipment, handles chemicals safely, and may perform minor repairs.

Performance Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Facilities Supervisor, PM Custodial Supervisor and/or Head Custodian, performs a variety of custodial duties in support of building operations. Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, tasks required to maintain the cleanliness, good order, sanitary and secure condition of the building. Must be capable of working reliably and of working as part of a team or independently to carry out assigned tasks and work schedules.

• Wears clean and appropriate uniform.
• Sweeps, mops, waxes, dusts and vacuums.
• Washes (cleans windows, walls, lockers, floors, chalkboard, furnishings).
• Performs outside services which include, but are not limited to, snow removal, flower beds, general lawn work, outside maintenance, and removal of debris from grounds.
• Rearranges/moves furnishings and delivers educational supplies (books, desks, teacher supplies, etc.).

Ability

• To operate common and specialized cleaning equipment and tools.
• To perform heavy physical labor, which includes lifting, pulling, pushing, and working off ladders.
• To use hand and small power tools to accomplish minor repairs and adjustments.
• To be able to work alone and unsupervised in an assigned area of the building to keep it clean and sanitary at all times. This by no means should curtail the individual from assisting in other areas of the building when needed.
• To adhere to safety standards and practices, especially when handling and using chemicals.
• To maintain cooperative and productive working relationships through the use of courtesy and tact when dealing with others.
• To carry out complex and/or multiple tasks.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand and walk for extended periods of time. There is bending at the waist, pushing, pulling, twisting, turning, kneeling, crawling, and climbing ladders. Dexterity needed of hands and fingers to operate power cleaning equipment.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.

Work Environment

• While performing the duties of the job, the employee works near moving mechanical parts.
• Occasionally, cleaning products will have powerful odors. If not handled properly, the cleaning products can cause skin irritation and/or rashes.
• Custodians also regularly have to clean up blood, saliva and other bodily fluids. They need to be familiar with precautions and procedures for cleaning up said fluids.

Compensation

As negotiated with the GTSPA $33,312-$49,952

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated twice a year in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Personnel.
