Job summary

Town of Lexington seeks a Custodian to support the Department of Public Facilities. The role focuses on keeping buildings and surroundings clean, safe, and well-maintained. Shifts include long 10-hour days, with responsibilities across floors, restrooms, windows, and common areas.

We are currently accepting applications for the position of:

Custodian

Department of Public Facilities

Anticipated Hourly Range: $26.46/per hour

TWO (2) Full Time

  • Four (4) consecutive ten (10) hour days; Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday 7:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. (40 hours per week).
  • Four (4) consecutive ten (10) hour days; Friday, Saturday & Sunday 7:30am - 6:00pm, Monday 12:00pm - 10:30pm (40 hours per week)

DESCRIPTION

A Custodian performs duties and assignments in support of town and maintenance operations. Although assigned to a specific building for accountability and administrative purposes, the incumbent fills in for vacancies or custodians on leave in any building

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS
  • Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, neat and clean always. Shovel, plow and/or sand walks and steps as needed.
  • Check daily to ensure all exit doors are opened at the start of the day.
  • Remove all waste and debris.
  • Mop workspaces (wet mop as needed) and dust fixtures. Vacuum carpeted areas, daily.
  • Clean corridors and stairs after work daily and during the day, when conditions require it.
  • Scrub, hose down, and disinfect toilet and floors daily and clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily. Check towel, tissue and soap dispensers and refill as necessary.
  • Wash all windows per cleaning schedule.
  • Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition, including halls and meeting spaces to ensure they are in a good state of preservation.
  • Replace light bulbs as needed.
  • Remain on Town premises during working hours, and during non-working hours during authorized use of the building when assigned as required by Director of Public Facilities or designee.
  • Report on all repairs such as broken windows, as well as vandalism damage to Department of Public Facilities
  • Assume responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each day and for determining, upon leaving, that all doors and windows are secured and that the alarm system is in working order.
  • Keep inventory of supplies and equipment and requisition needed replacements in a timely manner.
  • Check fire extinguishers for charge level and notify the Department of Public Facilities if there is a problem.
  • Perform minor maintenance and assist maintenance staff as needed.
  • Clean and maintain material and equipment.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in modern cleaning methods including basic methods for cleaning carpets, floors, restrooms, walls, furniture and fixtures.
  • Working knowledge of cleaning chemicals, supplies, and equipment and safety practices used in custodial work.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Maintain an assigned workplace, group of buildings or office space in a clean, orderly and secure manner during an assigned shift.
  • Learn custodial procedures, methods and schedules.
  • Use common cleaning equipment and materials in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Drive town vehicles to make deliveries.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Exercise sound judgment.
  • Work well under pressure.
  • Communicate and work well with others.
  • Be reliable and organized.
  • Use computer to request supplies and services.

JOB ENVIRONMENT
  • Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste.
  • Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Building Manager, Director of Public Facilities or designee.
  • Miscellaneous duties such as setting up tables and chairs for special events, providing direction and answering basic questions regarding events for patrons.
  • Perform other similar duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Custodians.
  • Performs snow removal operation as set forth by the Department of Public Facilities.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High School diploma (GED equivalent) or sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed in this job description.
  • Candidate must have a valid driver's license.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal record check (CORI), and a pre-placement medical exam with drug screening.

  • Working knowledge and experience with cleaning chemicals, supplies, equipment and safety practices used in custodial work.
