Job summary

The City of Murfreesboro is seeking a reliable janitorial/custodial professional to maintain the cleanliness of city facilities and surrounding grounds. The role includes preparing spaces for meetings and events, basic repairs, and operating city vehicles for errands as needed.

Qualifications include a High School diploma or GED, 3 months of janitorial experience, and a possible driver's license. This is a safety-sensitive role with drug testing requirements.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure safe and efficient operations.
• Open and close building; prepare for day activities; ensure building is secure at closing.
• Clean and maintain restrooms, drinking fountains, and kitchen areas in a sanitary manner.
• Remove litter and waste, care for plants, and perform light landscaping tasks.
• Move and arrange furniture and equipment up to 50 pounds; assist with setup for meetings.
• Dust, polish, and clean surfaces; replace light bulbs and air filters as needed.
• Perform minor repairs to facilities and equipment to keep spaces safe for patrons and staff.

Job description

This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.

The purpose of this class within the organization is to maintain the overall cleanliness of the facility and surrounding grounds and set-up for activities and meetings.

Essential Functions

• Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.
• Opens and closes building; prepares building for day activity; ensures building is secure at closing.
• Maintains and cleans restrooms, drinking fountains and kitchen in a sanitary manner
• Removes litter and waste paper from inside the building and on the surrounding grounds; cares for and waters plants.
• Replaces soap and paper products in dispensers, sweeps, mops, and waxes floors and stairwells on a routine basis; vacuums and cleans carpets.
• Cleans windows; changes light bulbs and air filters as needed.
• Sets up and takes down for meetings and carries equipment, tables, chairs and other objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance. Dollies are available to help with moving equipment and furniture.
• Dusts; polishes furniture; cleans window ledges, banisters, ceilings, radiators, and bleachers.
• Performs minor repairs to the facility and equipment as required and ensures the facility is safe for patrons and employees.
• Uses City-owned vehicles to run errands and deliveries.
• Uses a ladder and hand tools including, but not limited to, hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, heavy equipment, power tools, pliers, paint brushes, etc.
• Monitor building and report any maintenance needs to the supervisor.
• Some positions may require driving.
• Performs other work as assigned.
