PURPOSE: To provide students and staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to work, learn, play, and develop.

Functions

  • Follows all laws, Board Policies, regulations, rules and procedures, and complies with the instructions and/or directives from his/her supervisor(s).
  • Works primarily independently in assigned settings.
  • Establishes an effective working rapport with all other staff and maintains a positive relationship with the school district’s internal and external publics.
  • Opens building each day; raises/lowers flag at appropriate times when assigned.
  • Removes snow/ice from building entranceways and sidewalks and spreads ashes, cinders, ice melt, etc. as needed.
  • Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks and play areas, neat, clean and safe at all times.
  • Performs custodial work in all areas of the building and grounds as assigned.
  • When assigned to a classroom(s),dusts furniture, chalk trays, window shades and sills; cleans classroom sinks; empties trash; cleans chalkboards/whiteboards and erasers; empties wastebaskets; cleans glass, polishes chrome fixtures; straightens room and rows of desks, chairs and tables; and performs all other pertinent tasks.
  • Assists in handling shipping and receiving for the building, including assisting with deliveries and unloading of trucks and, as necessary, completing the receiving copy of each purchase order and forwarding such to head custodian.
  • Keeps all floors, carpets, and rugs in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
  • Aids in the cleaning of windows, inside and out, as well as all glass entryways.
  • Immediately reports any damage to building(s), grounds and /or equipment and/or safety hazards to the head custodian and principal.
  • Performs minor maintenance functions such as changing belts, oiling machinery, tightening belts, changing light bulbs, etc.
  • Assumes responsibility for areas to which he/she is assigned, including the securing of those areas each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured and all lights, except those left on for safety, are turned off, and pulls security gates, seeing to it that unauthorized personnel are not in areas where they do not belong, etc.
  • Moves furniture and equipment within the building as required for activities, assemblies, etc. and as directed by the administrator(s).
  • As assigned, checks all emergency lighting on a monthly basis.
  • Assists maintenance personnel who perform tasks in the building as requested.
  • Cares for, organizes and stores neatly all custodial equipment.
  • Cleans, lifts and moves cafeteria tables when needed.
  • Performs minor repairs to furniture, equipment and building.
  • Sweeps, dusts and mops floors and corridors of assigned areas and waxes and buffs floors as required.
  • In assigned areas, maintains cleanliness and sanitation of lavatories and cleans all plumbing fixtures regularly (e.g., drinking fountains, urinals, toilets, etc.), replenishing soap dispensers, toilet paper, towel holders, etc.
  • Performs miscellaneous tasks such as washing windows, changing light bulbs, servicing and cleaning equipment (e.g., floor machines, vacuums, pencil sharpeners, soap dispensers, tissue holders, etc.).
  • Dusts and washes furniture, walls, wainscoting, ceilings, woodwork, and handrails.
  • Sets up and removes furniture (e.g., tables, chairs, etc.), cleans all areas; removes garbage; and returns the area to the required set-up (e.g., put away bleachers and baskets, etc.) when special meetings and events are hosted.
  • Operates and cleans heating and ventilating systems and notifies the head custodian of the need to replace filters, lubricate working parts where applicable, and other necessary maintenance and/or repair.
  • Checks furnace, empties ashes, and shovels coal where applicable.
  • Exercises all necessary precautions to help prevent fires, is familiar with fire alarm procedures, and sees that all fire exits are clear.
  • As directed, maintains contemporary job-related awareness and personal growth through participation in staff development activities.
  • As authorized, works the additional hours necessary outside of the normal work day for the completion of tasks inherent to the position.
  • Performs work described herein without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of himself/herself or others.
  • Performs other duties and related tasks as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Has the ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Has the ability to make minor repairs that are typical to the environment to be serviced.
  • Displays an understanding of the cleaning process that is akin to a public school setting.
  • Possesses effective communication, judgmental, organizational, problem-solving, and human relations skills.
  • Has the ability to work with the other custodians and staff members in the building as a team.
  • Is flexible and able to adapt to changes in routine and to quickly and effectively adapt to circumstances, both expected and unexpected, as they arise.
  • Must be dependable, punctual, flexible, appropriately attired, neat in appearance and able to manage time appropriately.
  • Has the ability to drive a vehicle and possesses a valid driver’s license.
  • As is necessary, possesses needed technology-related knowledge and individual computer skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to remain on one’s feet and/or in a stationary position for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to move about the work area to perform duties and to access materials, supplies, tools, etc.
  • Must be able to operate equipment relative to his/her position and perform simple service or repair.
  • Must be able to travel between school district buildings and other job-related locations as assigned.
  • Must be able to withstand changes in environmental conditions inside and outside of the work facility and adapt to these changes.
  • Must be able to access all work areas and locations including, but not limited to, lifts, ladders, and confined spaces such as coal bins, crawl spaces, etc.
  • Must be able to push, pull, carry, and lift as required.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, and an 8-10 foot ladder and work at an elevation of 10-20 feet above ground level.
