Job description

UWO is now offering sign-on bonuses for new Custodial and Grounds employees!

Recruitment Bonus of $1,000 ($500 for part-time) will be awarded after successful completion of a 180-day Probation Period (6 months).

Retention Bonus of $1,000 ($500 for part-time) will be awarded after completing 1 year of employment.

Position Overview

The Custodian Lead reports to the Custodial Services Supervisor and is responsible for guiding custodial staff (permanent, temporary, and student) in performing cleaning services, as well as executing regular cleaning tasks. The ideal candidate must possess excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills, and be physically capable of performing custodial duties according to department standards. Responsibilities include assigning and reviewing work, operating custodial equipment safely, and adhering to all safety protocols, including handling potentially infectious materials.

Minimum Requirements
  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, twisting, stooping, squatting, kneeling, and working overhead.
  • Capability to lift up to 40 pounds routinely and work on your feet for an entire 8-hour shift.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Responsibilities
  1. Custodial Duties: Cleaning, disinfecting, restocking, waste removal, window and surface cleaning, furniture polishing, wall vent dusting, light bulb replacement, deep cleaning, spot cleaning, upholstery extraction, maintaining building security, and snow/ice removal.
  2. Lead Duties: Assigning tasks, planning and reviewing work, coordinating room and event setups, moving furniture, leading cleaning activities, managing supplies, training staff, and assisting with staffing coverage.
  3. Miscellaneous: Inspecting and maintaining equipment, reporting repairs, assisting with hiring and training, emergency cleanups, and other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with institutional or commercial custodial procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and chemical handling.
  • Customer service and communication skills.
  • Management experience.
