Universities of Wisconsin—University Housing seeks a Custodian Lead to supervise cleaning and trash removal across 1,000,000 square feet of residential housing, mentoring staff and coordinating with Restaurant Operations and external partners.

The role requires forklift driving experience, strong customer service, and the ability to lead a team through summer orientation and room turnover while maintaining safety and quality in a busy campus environment.

  • Ability to pull/push 100 pounds, lift up to 50 pounds, and carry up to 75 pounds for 25 feet.
  • Prior experience using and maintaining custodial tools (auto scrubbers, extractors, vacuums, fill stations, chemicals).
  • Customer service experience.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes basic equipment and supplies to clean assigned facility areas and remove waste and recyclables
  • Monitors and secures facility interior and exterior entrances and reports issues to appropriate entities
  • Maintains organization of supply areas and equipment, documents inventory, and requests additional supplies as needed
  • Documents and reports repairs, violations, and pest control needs
  • Maintains clean and clear walkways to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice
  • Schedules, monitors, and communicates with staff and assists with basic training
  • Responds to facility emergency and hazardous situations, and escalates incidents according to established policies and procedures

Job Duties:

Under the supervision of the Custodial Services Supervisor/Custodial Services Manager this position is responsible for assisting with trash responsibilities, mentoring and providing directions to staff, and providing a safe and clean maintained residential facility for our residents and guests. This custodial lead will oversee a team who successfully has the necessary supplies and trainings, positive relationships, and directions to get tasks completed within a team environment of 1,000,000 square feet of residential housing space and over 4,000 students during the academic year.

Custodial Leads within University Housing have direct contact with students and guests within their living environments while in the Residence Halls at UWM. The Custodial Lead will also be the point of contact with our partners within the halls (Restaurant Operations) and some external partners (FAA Waste and Recycling, Waste Management, etc).

During the summer months the Custodial Lead will be leading student and full-time employees through the residential conference and orientation season, intern center, and doing the summer room clean program which flips nearly 2,800 residence hall rooms, within 1,200 suites. These suites require full bathroom cleans in addition to a variety of other amenities ranging from living rooms, and full-sized kitchens.

Working Conditions:

  • Work inside of State of WI owned/leased and Foundation leased spaces including (vehicles, garages, residence halls, sidewalks, yards).
  • While working with the trash chutes the work is dirty and often smelly.
  • The weather conditions can range from hot and humid cleaning rooms in non-air-conditioned rooms in the summer to below 0 when needing to remove snow/ice in the winter on sidewalks and in front of entrances.

Miscellaneous Information:

The incumbent of this position will be expected to preform all duties in a professional manner and be extension of the Custodial Services Supervisor/Manager team. The emphasis will be on customer service and teamwork with the mission and vision of University Housing always in the for font. Required Qualifications:
  • Forklift driving experience
  • University Housing trash removal experience

  • Prior experience using and maintaining custodial tools (auto scrubbers, extractors, vacuums, fill stations, chemicals).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Basic understanding of a work order system
  • Ability to interact in a positive and professional manner with peers and students.
  • Previous leadership or supervisory skills of leading a group to accomplish a goal.
  • Knowledge of computer skills including: email, TEAMs, excel.
