Job description

Helena College University of Montana, a comprehensive two-year college, provides access to and support of high-quality lifelong educational opportunities for our diverse community. Helena College is seeking two qualified applicants to become part of a dynamic and creative team as full-time Custodian II. The Custodian II works under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Facilities.

The duties of the custodian include ensuring all work areas are clean, neat, and sanitary by sweeping, mopping, buffing floors, disinfecting, scrubbing, emptying trash, dusting, restocking paper products, and other items as directed. Other responsibilities include moving furniture and maintaining security of work areas during shifts. This position will also include cyclical work, such as deep cleaning of windows, carpet extraction, and snow removal. On occasion, the custodian may provide lead custodial services to a small crew of Custodian I’s and/or student work-study employees. Maintaining cleaning equipment, organizing cleaning gear lockers, and learning and performing maintenance on janitorial equipment are also custodial requirements.

Responsibilities
  1. Provide daily cleaning of the campus buildings and their contents to industry and department standards.
  2. Prepare reports and documents pertaining to maintenance, supplies, project cleaning, and physical inventories.
  3. Provide basic security for buildings by locking doors, windows, and checking for and reporting maintenance problems. Report hazardous situations and obtain assistance for distressed people.
  4. Perform project work with large and small teams. Work with other university departments as required. Interact with faculty, students, kitchen staff, and the general public at all times with patience, courtesy, and respect.

This position will work effectively at both our Donaldson and Airport campuses.

Minimum Requirements
  1. High school diploma and 6 months experience, or GED and one year of custodian/janitorial experience.
  2. The ability to perform constant and heavy physical activity.
  3. Knowledge of custodial cleaning techniques, supplies, and equipment; skilled in cleaning all types of physical environments; skilled in cleaning all types of floor materials; ability/willingness to learn and perform specialized cleaning techniques; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; must be skilled in time management; ability to maintain an organized, safe work environment; ability to work with little supervision; must be able to perform constant physical activity and heavy lifting and carrying.
  4. Must always work safely, identify unsafe conditions, and provide immediate action to safeguard campus personnel and equipment from damage.
  5. Requires flexible working hours to support business operations, Monday through Sunday, as requested by the supervisor.
  6. Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate both verbally and in writing.
  7. Must have experience with basic supervisory techniques. Assist in training employees. Ability to set priorities, evaluate work, and report findings to the supervisor.
  8. Ability to familiarize with basic physical layouts of both campuses. Communicate effectively with the campus community, colleagues, management, and the general public.
  9. Ability to perceive possible problems with environments and machinery.
  10. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  11. Must be able to communicate effectively, concisely, and congenially with co-workers and strangers.
Physical Demands

Ability to perform constant, heavy physical activity; ability to transport, set up, and work from scaffolds and ladders. Must be able to shovel snow and work in extreme weather conditions. Hazards include exposure to extreme heat, cold, and occasional wind; exposure to cleaning chemicals and supplies, bloodborne pathogens; slippery surfaces, live equipment, heavy lifting and carrying (up to 80 pounds), and working alone at night.

This position can require you to report early or stay late for snow removal, resulting in a longer than normal 8-hour workday (overtime compensation in accordance with Montana Code Annotated).

Work Schedule

Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Saturday varied. This position will work effectively at both our Donaldson (1115 North Roberts Street, Helena, MT) and Airport (2300 Airport Road, Helena, MT) campuses.
