Job summary

Indian River State College is seeking a Custodian to maintain classrooms, offices, and common areas across campus. You’ll support events, assist others, and help keep spaces clean, safe, and welcoming for students and staff.

The role emphasizes teamwork, reliability, and hands-on work, with training provided to ensure high standards in custodial practices. This is a full-time, on-site position based on IRSC’s Florida campuses.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; 1 year of related cleaning experience.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Pass training in Bloodborne pathogens, CPR, and Bleeding Control Basics.
  • Ability to lift and move items up to 50 pounds; work with minimal supervision.
  • Proven ability to perform custodial tasks safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Perform cleaning duties: sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and trash removal.
  • Clean classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, and common areas.
  • Assist with setup of furniture for events as needed.
  • Promote a safe work environment and follow safety standards.
  • Operate custodial equipment safely (buffers, extractors, vacuums).

JOB SUMMARY

Under direct supervision, this position performs custodial services for the College at assigned location. Responsibilities include: cleaning and minor maintenance of buildings externally and internally. Areas to be cleaned include classrooms, hallways, stairwells, restrooms, walls, carpets, floors, doors, light fixtures, entrance areas, cigarette and trash receptacles, classroom and dining tables, chairs, doors, windows and glass panes. Assisting with the set‑up of furniture for special events as needed.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform cleaning duties such as sweeping, cleaning of windows and light fixtures; mopping; vacuuming; emptying trash; wiping white boards; dusting and wiping desks, window sills, and baseboards; Clean classrooms, offices, hallways, stairwells, entrance areas, public areas; cleans and sanitizes restrooms and café areas; Use a bucket truck to clean higher windows and make minor repairs. Scrub, wax, and buffs floors; clean and shampoo carpets. Check and replenish paper and supplies. Promote safe work environment. Move and rearrange furniture; set up banquet tables; and clean up after events. Pick up trash; deliver garbage bags to dumpsters. May perform various projects as assigned. Politely and helpfully assist faculty and students with directions and assistance regarding general campus and classroom location or information is an integral part of the duties for this position; Complete all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or equivalent (Associate degree preferred); One (1) year of related work experience performing general cleaning tasks; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Valid Florida driver’s license. Pass training in Bloodborne pathogens, CPR, and Bleeding Control Basics. Proven work experience and the ability to perform general cleaning tasks competently, thoroughly and efficiently; Proven knowledge in general custodial responsibilities including the ability to utilize various cleaning materials and equipment in a safe, proper, and efficient manner; Proven ability to use custodial equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor buffers and scrubbers, mops, and other cleaning devices and associated products while promoting a safe work and learning environment; Possess the ability to work positively, cooperatively and supportively as a member of a custodial team; Interact pleasantly, professionally, diplomatically, and positively with co‑workers, faculty, staff, and students in a professional academic setting; Computer literate and possess the ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Ability to take direction from their immediate supervisor, constructive criticism with a positive attitude, and respond positively and supportively to any change in daily or building assignments; Be flexible with respect to daily assignments and be a self‑starter and work with minimal supervision at all times. Valid Florida driver’s license; PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physical skills required include the ability to operate cleaning equipment and also the ability to walk, bend and stand for extended periods of time. Lifting, reaching, stooping, climbing stairs and ladders, handling powered custodial equipment and carry items occasionally in excess of (50) pounds is also an expectation and requirement. The employee must be in good physical condition in order to do the type of work required. The position also requires the knowledge, experience and manual dexterity to operate such standard custodial machines such as buffers, floor polishers, and extractors. IRSC expects all of its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.

Pay Range

Pay range starts at: $15.76/hour | All salary calculations start at the minimum salary and will be based on candidate's education and experience | Open until filled.
